yep the "slim" models dont have the feature to install linux, so you'll have to go with the older fat models. They're both reliable models so u cant go wrong.

No direct mods at the moment. The PS3's security is amazing. With the fat model you can install Linux and run many types of emulators such as NES, SNES, Genesis, 32X... I think N64 is doable as well.
All other mods are external, such as extra lights, HDD... That sort of thing.

Re: Best PS3 to Buy for maximum modding
You can't play backups on a PS3 yet. I'd recommend getting a launch 60 GB model. They have a hardware emotion engine chip for PS2 backwards compatibility, which some homebrew uses. You can also install Linux on these models. I'm sure an emulator would run fairly well; it would have to be run on Linux, so some of the system resources are being used, but it shouldn't be a problem for anything SNES and earlier.
Re: Best PS3 to Buy for maximum modding
As far as I know the only thing you can do with a PS3 is set up Linux on it, which lets you do anything Linux lets you do. So full emulator support and they are as good as anything can be. I don't believe there's anything out there that lets you play backups. You'd have to have a Blu Ray burner anyway to be able to do backups, so there isn't much demade for it like there is on the 360.

Linux runs but it's castrated, Sony didn't allow access to the CPU or anything to avoid piracy so it's a bit like working in the dark for developers Mame, Snes, Megadrive, PS1 and lower all work nicely...
You can't copy a game to HDD on PS3
A 20GB will also play PS2 native thoses units are all black too.

Re: Best PS3 to Buy for maximum modding
with Linux installed you can emulate most systems Pre-playstation, i do think N64 is runnable not sure. MAME is for sure.
i know people get quake II and doom to run on pS3 linux just fine.
i dont think ps3 is able to boot backup discs

Re: Best PS3 to Buy for maximum modding
Considering the system has been out for almost 3 years, is this some kind of record for not being hacked?
It seems very impressive considering every console this decade has been hacked for backups fairly quickly.

The Cell is the only thing that is accessible via Linux, you don't have any GPU acceleration unfortunately.Krooner wrote:Linux runs but it's castrated, Sony didn't allow access to the CPU or anything to avoid piracy so it's a bit like working in the dark for developers Mame, Snes, Megadrive, PS1 and lower all work nicely...
