It's quite simple, procrastinate if you don't have any goals (in life or otherwise).
If you have goals, use three simple rules:
Make them measurable
Make them possible
Set deadlines
Hopefully everyone here has heard those rules before.
And here's the thing, I used to procrastinate all the time when I was younger. In high school, in undergrad, and even sometimes in grad school. Procrastinating is a waste of energy. Avoiding something doesn't get rid of it, even worse, when I procrastinated, I always thought about what I was avoiding, instead of just getting the work that needed to be done, done. So when I was slacking off, I was still worried about shit.
Just get your work done asap, and then you can slack off without any worrying.
How difficult is it to get yourself going?
Re: How difficult is it to get yourself going?
I think most people are like you including me...
I used to keep studying off until 3-4 hours before the exam's time, then I do start studying
realizing I can understand a lot, I wish that I started earlier so I can cover more topics.
I think there is no secret to it, just pick up yourself and start doing whatever...soon you will find yourself getting things in time(i am writing this as a form of procrastination )

I went to a psicologist so as to see what could I do about procrastination, we are still at it but we are trying to discover WHY I procrastinate.
My parents have very much to do with it, with their preassure and stuff.

Re: How difficult is it to get yourself going?
Ive found that I procrastinate the most if I start something then get taken away from it. All of my drive for that task was wasted. That said if I can get deep into something, ie the Dreamcast database for Racket, and I can get some good music going, Ill endup going for hours on end.
I also like to think through how to do things three or four different ways. Many people consider it procrastination, but I am weighing the variables. But once I figure out a way that I think is the best, well then it is just a matter of time before it is completed. This is why I worked well in the hotel industry. Once you figure out a process that works well it becomes the norm. The same cannot be applied in the office I work for...

You procrastinate because you are avoiding something you would rather not do.General_Norris wrote:I went to a psicologist so as to see what could I do about procrastination, we are still at it but we are trying to discover WHY I procrastinate.
Feel free to send me a check.
Re: How difficult is it to get yourself going?
So your procrastination is your parents' fault? Sorry, even if you have shit parents, at some point you are responsible for you.General_Norris wrote:I went to a psicologist so as to see what could I do about procrastination, we are still at it but we are trying to discover WHY I procrastinate.

Couldn't agree more. What the fuck is going on with the concept of personal responsibility? I'd like to know what people not in the states think about this kind of thing.dsheinem wrote: So your procrastination is your parents' fault? @general norris:
What the fuck? If I didn't get my work done at school because I was sat procrastinating with my video games or TV/videos, do you know what my parents did? I'll give you two guesses and a clue: they didn't send me to a psychologist.
It seems like your parents are procrastinating about actually parenting you properly.
When I have kids I'm not having any of this ADD/ADHD shit. There's no such thing, ADHD is simply bad parenting, It's not giving your child proper boundaries and real examples of how somebody should act. If you aren't consistent with your child, guess what, they're behaviour isn't going to be consistent either. I understand that children can have learning difficulties, that's fair enough but the sheer amount of kids these days that claim they have ADD or ADHD are just looking for an excuse to pin their lack of motivation on. I remember when it was "the dog ate my homework" or "I lost my pen" as to reasons kids didn't do their work. Now it's "I have ADD" It's complete fucking bullshit. If your (this is a general your not aimed at anyone on here) kid is hyperactive then maybe it's because you are plying him/her with shit loads of junk food and sugar that the poor kid has so much built up energy that he isn't using. Take your kid out for a game of football or just play with them, make them use that sugar that you give them. It's no wonder they act up at school, they need an outlet for all this energy you are giving them.
When I was young I never really showed any interest in sports, I was more interested in nature. So instead of taking me to the park my dad or grandad used to take me on bike rides or on walks around the fields teaching me things about the world. I can tell you when you are only 10 a 2.5 mile walk is shattering and definitely works up an appetite. I never stepped out of line, and have always done well at school. I have my parents to thank for that.
Sorry to rant about this, but it's something that really gets on my goat, we have a serious problem with teenage pregnancies over here and the amount of kids that are having kids just does not bode well for the next generation at all.

Re: How difficult is it to get yourself going?
Now why do you people think ADD does not exsist? I have a nephew and a cousin suffering through ADD and AADD. Do some research before you say things like it does not exsist. My nephew who at the age of 2 we thought had hearing problems because you could yell his name and he would not respond. If he did not see you when you were talking he could not even hear you. Because of this he had to start school late and is still struggling to pass classes. Its not bad parenting my sister and her husband are great parents and loving.
My cousin who is my age always seemed off. I thought he was stupid when I was young. Unlike my nephew he would get angry if too much was going on. He could not for instance be in around two people talking to him at the same time.
Now do people use ADD as a scape goat, yes. Even my mom would always say I was lazy or missbehaved because she thought I had ADD, even when my psychiatrist would say otherwise. I just wanted attention thats all, most kids would if their parents are going through a bad devorce.
