What was the last movie you've seen?

Coming soon from my NetFlix queue:

* Big Bang Theory: Season 2, Disc 4
* Cthulhu (an indie horror film from a couple of years ago, based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft)
* Trainspotting (seen it before)
* Dario Argento's The Card Player (a murder mystery about a killer who broadcasts his murders on a webcam-enabled online poker site)

Recently upgraded my NetFlix account to 4 DVDs. Particularly useful since I plan on going on a bit of a horror movie bender in October.

Try incr-EH-dible.

To me, it's no where near as good as UP and Cloudy. It's just okay. Wouldn't recommend it, wouldn't bash it.

Oh, I see. Now I can't understand how I managed to miss that. :oops:

Got to love The Great Outdoors, it still holds up very well and the family stereotypes portrayed still exist.

Re-watched the trilogy. Speaking of holding up well, the story is still amazing.

Turistas (2006) – I figured this would be like Hostel but in Brazil – so I was ready for some torture porn and over-sexed teens. And while the movie does a good job of contrasting the beauty of the environment with the ugliness of death, the small number of scares and the poorly-realized sense of suspense really drags this down as a horror film. The actors are certainly less annoying than those in the Hostel films, but the story itself is entirely predictable and the pacing is slow. If you really have a fear of travel, maybe it’s worth a look – but there are better recent horror films dealing with tourists (I would recommend Wolf Creek, for example).
Grade: 2/5

I have to say that I think you were a bit harsh on this one. It is definitely not a great movie but based on the sheer mountain of crap that gets released as horror these days I think it deserves at least a 3/5 maybe even 3.5/5. Yes, it was predictable and less violent than some others..but at least it had some production value.

It could just be that we watch A LOT of horror in my house..so I see some real stinkers.

On another note...we watched "Labyrinth" in HD last night and it has really aged well. Some of the CGI looks crappy of course but it was still a great movie.

I might have been kinder if the last 15 minutes or so weren't so terrible - the underwater chase scenes were just not at all suspenseful and entirely uninteresting. Granted, it is hard to do underwater scenes well in a any kind of film - but for the climax of a horror film, it was a poor choice - especially considering all the more interesting locales showcased in the film. The build up to the arrival of the doctor at the house was much better than everything that came after (and yes the production values were pretty good). But I stick by my grade, as a good horror film needs to deliver in the scares and/or squeamishness department and this just didn't do either very well. Maybe if it had come out a decade earlier, it would have been a more noteworthy flick.

Eureka Seven - good night, sleep tight, young lovers -

Decent re-imagining of the series, but the plot was a bit too scattered and convoluted to be taken seriously. Still though it was a decent flick and fun watch for fans of the series, just not worth the $13 bucks I paid to see the one time only screening at the big multiplex.

The very last movie I watched was Away We Go with John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph. The movie revolves around the two as the couple, Burt and Verona, who have just recently been gifted with a pregnancy. The movie starts 6 months into that pregnancy and with the desire to grow as a couple and as a family strengthens, the two decide to travel to various locales across North America to find a place to reside permanently. Along this trip they visit friends and family members and see all the different varieties of family life in all of their strange and nuanced moments. This movie is quite entertaining, especially for a more "independent" style. Krasinski's character Burt is quirky and delightful as a Malaprop spewing, "Insurance for Insurance," salesman and he really commands each scene with his awkward and unusual ways. This is also a wonderful view of Americana as their destinations range from all over the U.S. and even Canada. The pace of the film is a bit slower, but is tempered with truly unique wit and sly dialog that leaves you anxious and anticipating the strange and absurd situations.

Add to this the bond between the two as they learn from the mistakes others have made, grow closer as a couple and truly begin the epic journey family's take when expecting. I can not stress how excellent this film is not only from a critical point of view, but also from a fan of movies large and small. Be entertained and watch this movie if you enjoy the more nuanced independent style films that lack the pretentiousness of most in that genre.

So I finally got around to watching Rambo First Blood Part II. So many of the jokes in UHF make sense now...

Anyways, it's perfect for an 80s action film. Stallone is ridiculously strong, stuff blows up constantly, the bad guys get killed, and the American military is the hero, unlike those evil government bureaucrats. It made me miss the days of Ronald Reagan and G.I. Joe cartoons.

And it even came complete with a speech about the poor treatment of American veterans after the Vietnam War. Sure, it's ridiculous and over acted, but a lot of fun.

Blade 3 on DVD

What happened with this one? The first two films were awesome. The direction in 3 was spotty at best and the editor must have fallen asleep a few times...

Big Bang Theory Season 2, Disc 4.

Right now: Cthulhu ('07 film inspired by the works of H.P Lovecraft)

Soon: Trainspotting, The Card Player

And some DVD's I recently got:

* Batman 1-4. Batman and Returns, Forever, and finally & Robin. All for $10. That's $2.50/ea, in lieu of paying thrice the price for just the first two. And I am a bit of a completionist (ironically, I recently scored a VHS copy of Returns, and still seek a copy of B&R to round out my VHS collection)
* Clive Barker's Book of Blood
* Are You Afraid of the Dark? Freaky Favorites. Six episodes from the show, though strangely all are from the new series and none from the old series.

And finally a boxset (cost $10) featuring 8 "grindhouse sci-fi" movies. The films are:

* The Galaxy Invader
* Kong Island
* Warriors of the Wasteland (already have a DVD from Digiview)
* Cosmos: War of the Planets
* The Day Time Ended
* The Doomsday Machine
* War of the Robots (which features the father of Antonio Sabato Jr.)
* It's Alive

Basically, it's 8 cheap, possible public domain feature films of a dubious quality (i.e. sourced from a VHS tape).

Just finished watching The Machinist. Very cool if somewhat depressing movie. Bale does a very good job of making you feel sorry for him as he loses it despite the event that sets things in motion.
