Looking for a programmer...

Post by lordofduct »

Hello everyone,

I figure it is time enough to divulge a project I am working on; as I actually have an entire crew with me now to take on a project that has been in conceptual design for several years now.

First off, back story:

2 and a half years ago I finally sat down and started scrapping out ideas for a project I've dreamt of since childhood. My very own videogame. On my own though there was very little I could do. I am a meager programmer with no computer art skills to be found anywhere in me.

Over 1 and a half years I developed a Sonic the Hedgehog clone I wanted to make (after scrapping the idea of an RPG as they are a LOT harder then one would expect to develope). I finally found a capable artist, but he hated the idea of doing a Sonic clone. And I came to the conclusion we may want to take this further then a hobby (which copyright laws wouldn't allow us if it were a Sonic game).

So we reshaped the idea of the game... but alas my brother and parents died and I turned rather reclusive.

Thankfully the year I disappeared for allowed my 3D artist to finish up school (gets out at the end of this month) and for me to scrape up tons of cash to produce our project and put a roof over the heads of some of our staff who are dedicating mass amounts of time to the game.

Since we have totally fleshed out the game mechanics and conceptual design of the entire game. We have also located several other talented people to join in on the project.

Adny our lead 3D artist
Edd a great level design and background artist
and another basic 3D artist for mass MOB creation

we've also got 2 sound developers

another, a friend of my ex-girlfriends, Rene who owns a comic book company and is willing to put together an indepth story line for the title

And myself... the ONLY programmer. A bit of a problem I would say as I wouldn't call my self a great programmer by any stretch. It is a bit of a learning experience for me.
Though I am also the creative Director and Producer supplying all licenses and costs for this game (i.e. price of engine and publishing licenses when the time comes)

Yes that is right, we WANT to publish this game... I'm not saying it WILL happen, but we want to do what ever is in our power to get atleast a PC version of the game out. If not an XBOX360 arcade title (for the marketplace).

---------------
Basic game play:

The game will be a 2.5D side scrolling adventure game redered completely in 3D but played retro style (think Contra Shattered Soldier, or the new remake of Castlevania Rondo of Blood) The main character (as seen below in the drawing) wields a sword and all combat is melee style. The idea is that the hooks on the end of the sword are a way to hold onto enemies and walls. Allowing you to cling to objects and throw enemies like projectiles. Enemies will be of 3 weight classes: light, medium, and heavy and interact differently when grabbed (light enemies can be carried and thrown easily where as heavy enemies can not be carried, but in turn drag your character around).

We have hopes to fill the screen with as many enemies as the game engine will allow. And to develope greatly on a multiplayer side of the game that utilizes a monster collecting scheme in the main game. Where you can pit monsters against each other online in several different style matches: FPS capture the flag, FPS kill frenzy, fighter slip off (i.e. the slip off matches in Soul Calibur), flight racing... amongst others.

That should be enought to peek any interest. If anyone is willing a may divulge more.
---------------
SO:

I am looking for a programmer who knows C++ or better knows the torque engine by garagegames.com to assist in making this game. The game is going to be done in the 'Torque Game Engine Advanced' with an XNA license to port it too the XBOX360 as the gameplay is based around a dual analog stick controller with 4 analog triggers.

Forwarning, working on this title does not guarantee any payment. That all depends on if we even get the game published in the long run. We hope to have the title in Beta by after Christmas season and a releaseable title by summer next year. The main team members (Adny, Ed and myself) will be jobless from here on out and dedicating all our free time to the creation of this title. If publishing occurs we want to incorporate ourselves and continue releasing low budget retro style video games on platforms such as the XBOX360 marketplace. Future developements will keep all members of initial project in mind and may result in actual employment.

Oh yeah, I am located in West Palm Beach Florida. It isn't necessary for you to be near my location, but it would certainly be great.

Wow -- I'm impressed that you are this far along.
I have a Computer Science degree and was a COBOL programmer for a few years, but I'm a bit rusty in C++, nor do I have any game programming experience or a continued interest in doing complicated programming. I can do it, it just doesn't get me going, if you know what I mean.

I've always found myself to be more of a group leader as I have a strong background in programming, graphic design, and business (plus an obvious knowledge of old-school gameplay). So I guess, if you need a bit of consulting, I would like to lend a hand. But I don't think I would be doing you any favors by being a main programmer.

On a side note, I've always wanted to be an indie game publisher. I'd like to think with my reputation and marketing skills I could serve as a person to get the word out about games. Of course, I don't have resources (yet) for gettting games on consoles or whatever, but maybe somebody I can get there.

Anyway, I'm interested in helping out somehow.

I'm more or less looking for a back up programmer... and you are a rather busy person as is, so I probably wouldn't of asked you for it.

I've got all the funds up for development (I have 100 grand at this moment to pour into licenses, food and hardware that we need... of course this is also what pays the rent and other nonsense while we work on it)... In the future though I am going to want definate marketing. I hope with all the forums I hang out at that just my threads in the future (this is the first... I want to wait for a fully working beta before actual telling everyone about it). It would be cool if you could write something on here about it... my target demographic is retro style gamers, which fits perfectly with this site. I feel that the XBOX 360 marketplace is booming with retro gamers with the success of such retro games as "Geometry Wars" which for several months was the number one selling game on Marketplace.

But like I said, that is future prospect... I don't want to go blabbing all over the world about it and never come up with the follow through. Though at the moment several of my members are hard dedicated to this, just as I am.

Awesome project!! I have been wanting to do the same thing for probably 20 years (games technology are my life) and have hundreds of ideas :D . Too bad I'm not a programmer, I have nothing but free time and no obligations  .

Good Luck on your project!

Wow -- that's some hefty funding.
So do you have anybody working full time on it? Or is it just a side project for everyone?
What type of time-frames are you looking at?

There are 2 full timers... Adny and myself (the main guys behind it). Initially it was only us, and we didn't expect to find others to be interested. Although I certainly am NOT surprised that no one can dedicate full time like we are. It just so happens the two of us can afford it, unlike anyone else.

Ed was going to be full time, but his father called us a bunch of idiots and demands he doesn't work on it. So he is doing it in his spare time.

Rene is part time

as for the other guys, I am assuming they are part time. They are Adny's friends, so I am not sure exactly.

...

The funding as I said is to cover all bases. Adny and myself aren't going to be having jobs through out the creation of this game, so we need money to support ourselves. He is moving into my house which has a low mortgage and I own another business that brings in money spuradically. So the 100 grand will be there to feed and house us and any one else who wants to come on full time... as we can't afford to pay anyone.

As for time scale... I believe I said in my first post I want it out by next summer. By the end of this summer we should have basic gameplay all programmed, several models done up, and maybe a whole level fleshed out. By December or January we hope to have a couple levels fleshed out and complete storyline... possibly even a testable beta version for beta testers out there to play and look for bugs.

From January until Summer we will be animating cutscenes, finishing up all sound effects and music, working out kinks and adding all the little details to the levels that we want.

If at any point we fet grossly off schedule we will have to reassess our financial situations to make sure we can support ourselves to meet such demands. This is a big leap for us, but I really feel we can make it... and as I said, I've got low mortgage and another business... if anything goes wrong we won't kill ourselves.

Well, I greatly admire your dedication and vision.
I'll gladly do whatever I can to promote it once it's further along, so I'm very much for beta testing and all that good stuff. I'll be as critical as you want me to be ;)

Is there any documentation or whatever on how to get published on XBLA?

Hmmm, so why are you using the torque engine? From my limited experience, 3D seems a lot tougher to program for, and since it's all on a 2D plane, why bother? Also, you talked about a lot of enemies, well that would be really taxing on the processor with all those models flying around. Why not go with pre-rendered sprites like Donkey Kong Country? I don't know if that's possible, but it Sounds easier to me. *shrug*
