Full potential.

Post by jp1 »

We all know which systems did not live up to their full potential. Which one would have been the greatest if it had. If the developers had the full time span to really max out the hardware and come up with fresh new ideas.

For me the 3DO was a good example of this. It didn't have enough software support to make the most of the system. If someone like Treasure would have made a game that really took full advantage of the machine it could have been really great. The M2 add on also would have really made it a beast.

Look at some of the 2D ports like Street Fighter and Samurai Showdown as well as 3D titles such as Road Rash and Need for Speed. These were all just ports and did not really have proper development for the specific hardware and they were still some of the best available copies of the games.

So which games/systems didn't "push the limits" but would have been amazing if they had?

Have you played any imports on the Saturn?

The 32X never got close to reaching it's full potential. Second place would be the Saturn.
Systems: Atari 2600, Atari Jaguar, NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Genesis 3, Genesis 2, 32X, Sega CD (model 2), Saturn (model 1), Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox (Modded), Xbox 360, GameBoy, GBA SP, Game Gear, PSP... always adding more

Saturn
3DO
and even though it was a lot of hardware, I was interested to see what could have really been done with the 32X + Sega CD Combo :)

Yes I have played imports, but I still believe that the full potential on the Saturn wasn't reached, especially in the 3d game department. If they hadn't lost many of their original developers when they launched early and they actually released the Sonic Game the were planning to, then I might take the Saturn out.

Mind you, I love my Saturn and it has been one of my favourite things to collect, but in my eyes they did not reach their full potential. To each their own I guess.

Considering Shenmue was originally a saturn project, I'd say it definitely didn't reach its full potential.

Agreed, but I like the outcome game for the Dreamcast... now if they would only make Shenmue 3 :(
