Discworld

Post by Curlypaul »

So I downloaded Monkey Island on the wii the other day. I've never played a MI game before but I remeber being dead jealous of all my Amiga owning school friends owning it so I was pretty pleased to finally get to play.

It got me in the mood to revisit the Discworld games. The first one was brutally difficult. You would find items (like a bone) and then you would find things that they would be likely to be used on (like a dog) but that would never work, the answers to the puzzles were always entirely illogical and without GameFAQs to help I got nowhere. I feel compelled to go back and beat the fucker.

I tried playing it a few months ago on the saturn (its the version that I played in the first place) but I fould the load times to be unbearable. Is the PS version any better or should I try the PC one? my PC is rubbish but it wont be loading of a CD so maybe it be better.

The PC version definetly loads much faster than the console ports - not sure if there's any significant differences between the Saturn & PSX versions. Personally i'd just go with the PC originals, it doesn't matter how rubbish your PC is, it should definetly be able to play Discworld.

I'm a big fan of the books and all 3 of the games (although Noir had it's fair share of problems), even if the first one is as you say brutally difficult - I remember spending most of the time clicking everything on everything, can't count the number of times I heard Eric Idle say "That doesn't work!". Some of the puzzles were utterly bizarre, but it was cool when you finally figured out what you were supposed to do.

I've just downloaded the first game, but its in french and its a DOS program, was there ever a windows version?

I played the sequel as well, I remember it running much better and the puzzles were a bit easier, although still hard enough to be challenging. Still want to crack the first game though.

The sequels were Discworld 2 and Diskworld Noir.

Pratchet was involved in the design so the puzzles are pretty insane

Yep, they're supported by ScummVM. I love ScummVM. From what I remember, the puzzles in Discworld (I only played the first) were even less intuitive than most Sierra games.

Ok maybe I'm being dumb but what files do I need to make scummvm work?

I downloaded Discworld and I've got a directory that contains DWB.exe, DWU.exe and a whole heap of .gra files. When I point scummvm to the directory it tells me there is no game found?

Is scummvm wii an exact port of the pc version?

Not sure how the Wii version would work. Check around in the SCUMMVM forums, they're really helpful and will know exactly what files you need.
