Which Racing Games Have Aged the Best?

Sega Rally!

Sega Rally for the Saturn is simply the most fun i've had playing a racing game. Its challenging, fun, looks pretty good, and has none of the problems lots of other Saturn games had (choppy graphics, blocky polygons, etc.)

Sega Rally 2 for the Dreamcast is pretty much the exact same thing, only with slightly better looking graphics, more tracks, more cars and more features. Only reason I like the Saturn version better is the amazing Saturn controller brings the game to life.

Sega Rally Revo for the 360 is not a retro game but still fun. You can get it for less than ten bucks, so if you liked the originals then pick it up.

Unfortunately, the Sega Rally studio that developed those games is pretty much closed down now. Too bad.

Revs on the BBC Micro & C64 (developed by Geoff "Formula One Grand Prix" Crammond) has stood up remarkably well, thanks in no small part to some rather nifty driver AI. While the graphics are decidedly minimalist and pixelated by today's standards, the illusion of speed and accurately modeled road contours are still impressive. Some 25 years after its release, the vast majority of driving sims still have flat roads with basic gradients.

A lot of my friends love Mario Andretti's Racing on the Genesis, but it kind of falls flat for me.

Lotus Turbo Challenge is another one that has a good group of fans, but other than the fact you have a "Yahoo!" button, it does little for me.

Wow - no mention of Daytona USA? Sure, the Saturn version was choppy as hell and only had 2-Player upon its re-release, but I still love to play that game. Plus, I always love going to places that have those 8-player Daytona USA arcade set-ups.

Other than that, I'll also throw up Hydro Thunder and San Francisco Rush 2049.

I thought about mentioning the san francisco rush games but I haven't played them since they were new so I don't know if they've aged well.

I will mention Beetle adventure racing though.

F-Zero all the way back to the SNES is still great fun. I think I even like the SNES one best actually (I also have the N64 and GameCube versions). I remember playing it on some imported super famicoms before the US super nintendo was released and I was so blown away by it. I still play it to this day.

I also like the Xtreme G series.

The Midway Treasures 3 set is nothing but old school racers like STUN runners, Super Offroad, and San Francisco Rush. It's a great little retro package.

Wave Race on the N64 is probably my favorite racer ever.

They're not THAT old, but Midnight Club 2 and 3 are some of my favorites on the PS2.

Rad Racer has aged ok, but not great, in my opinion. Maybe it's just because I've played through it so many times.

Midnight Club is awesome. I used to get it confused with Wangan Midnight though.
