To counter Ziggy, I have a launch SNES and a ROB launch NES, neither are yellowed...though I have heard the same thing. I am going to guess it is a bad batch and if in poor atmosphere makes it yellow.

Certain runs from some production factories mixed different kinds of chemicals in different ratios together to make the plastic. Because of these variables certain plastics will yellow faster than others, and some wont turn yellow at all.

That makes perfect sense, and would explain why most SNES have weird yellowing patterns. Like only the top half yellowing or vise versa. Or like my SNES, the top and bottom yellowed but the controller ports, area around the cartridge slot, area around the A/V ports, and EXT port cover did not yellow.

So the plastics contain bromine, which causes the yellowing, and it was used as a flame-retardant... some mixture of Oxy-clean and sunlight is supposed to get rid of the yellow tinge. I really want to try it myself...

Looks like yellowed teeth. Ugh.

From the LINKLINKLINK in my previous post:

"The Super NES, as well as our other systems, are made with a plastic containing flame-retardant chemicals to meet safety guidelines. Over time, the plastic will age and discolor both because of these chemicals as well as from the normal heat generated from the product or exposure to light. Because of the light color of the plastic of the SNES and NES, this discoloration is more easily seen than with other darker plastics such as on the N64 and the Nintendo GameCube.

Casey Ludwig"

Also, apparently Nintendo assembled their products from pieces made in two different factories where SNES parts were manufactured, which is why occasionally only half of a given console or cartridge will fade.

Recent advancements in curing NES / SNES / GB yellowing?

Post by BAD PIXEL »

I pulled up a few posts on the forum for some information, but most of them seemed to be years old. Does anyone have any new ideas as far as how to cure the yellowing that often times inflicts NES, SNES and GB consoles?

I found some good information about Retr0bright here, but just wanted to see if anyone had any first hand experience with this method. Also, will it take off any painted off logos (I'm guessing so)?

It's not that big of a deal really, the yellowing is pretty minor, but any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

I found out about Retrobright recently too. I plan on giving it a try soon. Aside from a yellowed SNES I have a bunch of Amigas and a C128 I got for free that are pretty bad.

Yeah, the Retr0bright solution sounds like a good plan. Of course, the area where my NES is yellowing is where the red painted logo is (on the front and cart door), so that's a concern as I'm pretty sure that it'll take the color out of the pain as well - but I could be wrong. Other option is to just get a broken NES with a non-yellow top casing. At least it's just minor yellowing, I've seen some WAY yellow SNES, C64 and Mac systems.

Fucking Google Search It!

Why is there always someone posting about Yellow SNESes? I remember posting that Vintage Computing article in at least four other threads. :x
