Best N64 ROM Mods + Texture Packs

Post by 404Ender »

Hey everyone,

I've finally done the research and saved up the money and decided to build a home theater PC for my apartment. In addition to all of the audio and video-related perks, this will allow me to put away my old systems and games and play them all from one spot. I'm particularly interested in N64 emulation, and I'd like to take advantage of playing on a nice TV with a powerful system.

I've tried to do the research myself, but the results seem scattered across forums posts and blog entries, many of which date back to 2-3 years ago. I was hoping you could all help me compile a list of the best texture packs and mods of N64 titles that are out right now, preferably ones that are complete or mostly complete.

Thanks in advance!

Very few of them are complete, and N64 is still kinda garbage in my opinion. The audio still has random pops and the filtering is still on certain objects and fonts when it shouldn't be. There's not a single game that emulates really well yet.

I'd disagree, n64 emulation is at the very least adequate. I haven't had any problems with the sound, but there are graphical issues scattered about. In general, these won't be very bad and different games will naturally play at different levels of quality. Like Moz said, text usually looks a little funny, and the only other common error I recall is usually related to effects (like when the image on the screen warps). You can often use special settings to fix these issues, but it's a real pain in the ass to keep switching your settings. For the most part though, just download Project64 and see what you think.

On the subject if texture packs, most are incomplete. Like, you can count the finished ones on one hand. Some popular games have at least one complete, but it's slim pickin for the most part. There are some 90% complete ones, if that doesn't bother you than maybe give them a shot.

Show me goldeneye being emulated perfectly and I'll shut up. Til then, "adequate" is worthless to me. Hell, Sega Saturn emulation has now passed 64, but I still won't let my Saturn go until it's perfect. PS1 emu still isn't perfect, so I still have my PS1. I just have high standards for this stuff.

Fair enough.

The real issue is that most (if not all) emulators are not absolutely perfect. That's where multiple complete projects come in, but it seems like things have been moving very slowly on the emulation front (not that it was ever a very speedy business to begin with).

I've seen Project 64 emulate Majora's Mask with aplomb. If your goal is emulation, there are adequate utilities available. And you don't seem like the kind to demand perfection.

Anyways, as for texture packs and mods, there is actually an article about it on racketboy. I haven't tried this stuff myself, but it's pretty swanky from the looks of it.

There is also a similar article regarding Playstation emulation, if you're interested.

Have anyone here tried the latest Project64 build? I haven't tried it because I'm not a site member, but maybe someone here, has?

Yup. I still see no improvements to anything between it and the last official.

There are plenty of improvements. Like... um...

Yeah Project64 just took the donations and ran on that one.

It's why I never donate to anyone until after they delivered something awesome. Like when Streets of Rage Remake 5.0 ever comes out, I may throw some money his way.
