Cheated!

Post by Hatta »

So a while back I got a Mac Classic II off of Craigslist. This was mainly to netboot my Apple IIgs. Anyway, I wanted to try setting up TCP on the mac and browsing the web a bit. First I got some RAM. 2 4 meg 30 pin SIMMs to max out the Classic II at 10 mb (with 2mb on board). When I install the RAM though, nothing happens. I still get the 4mb RAM I started with. I ask the folks at the 68k MLA and it turns out I have a Mac Classic in a Classic II case. Half the speed, and less than half the RAM. Crap. Oh well, at least I have an excuse to track down an SE/30.

Ouch, that sucks. Nothing you can really do about it either, is there?

Not really, I've had the thing for several months now. At least it still serves it's main purpose as a network drive for the IIgs. I could still install NCSA Mosaic, but I was hoping for netscape. Guess it's good for Dark Castle and the MacVenture games too. Not sure if there are any other good games for 68k macs. Maybe some of the World Builder adventure games.

Still, I'll eventually track down an SE/30. You can stick a whole 128mb of RAM in those things.

I'm not too bummed, as I got my 3-in-1 for my DS yesterday, and found a relatively cheap flash drive solution for my Atari 600XL. Fun stuff.

For the longest time, I couldn't remember the great game that I played on my Mac 20+ years ago but you just helped me! Dark Castle. That was an awesome game. From the wiki, it seems that there's a new version that was released last year. I'll have to hunt it down.

Yeah, that's the one everyone remembers, since it was pretty much the only good games for the 68k macs. There's also a sequel, Beyond Dark Castle.
