I was not a person who cared so much about graphics, I cared more about graphic style
and as long as the game is fun I'll play it but I have been complaining about emulation ROMs
They look dull and just not right, although I have not played Snes/Genesis for the last 10+ years I have
a memory that they looked better than what we have on emulation. I posted earlier about this and some one
told me here that roms even work better than VC, I forgot what was his reason.
I downloaded Super Metroid from VC and it was great the graphics are clear and wonderful just like I remember the
Snes always was. Out of curiosity I downloaded the ROM of the game and played it on the homebrew Snes9x emulator. It looked different! I was right it is duller and not as good.
While the difference is not THAT huge and I think it is great that we can play full Snes/genesis library for free and on multiple platforms(DS, PSP, PC, Wii) and it works really good, I just wanted to bring to your attention that it does look inferior to the originals I guess. Maybe it loses data or something when converted to ROMs.
If you have a choice go with the originals or VC, I found out VC looks noticeably better.

The Wii actually blurs the picture on the picture on the VC games, making them look more smooth in a way. It's not pure. Nintendo alters it so that you can't see the jagged edges in the games as easily by using what you could call a "graphic filter". It's a bit like putting vaseline on the TV so that you can see the jagged edges in games. On a ROM, the picture is actually pure. The games might look a bit more blocky, but it's exactly the way there were made.
Some emulators, especially on the PC, have graphic filters that clear up the jagged edges. In most cases, the games look substantially better than they did originally on their respective consoles. Some emulators through Wii homebrew allow graphic filters as well, but it usually is too taxing on the Wii and slows down the framerate.
Technically, it is the games on the VC that come out "inferior" most of the time. Nevertheless, some people prefer the more original look to the more crisp look that you get through emulation.
Does that make sense for you?

Re: Roms vs VC
I am not here to argue
I know what you are saying
none the less the VC version looks better.
Before testing out VC I have asked if there was something wrong with ROMs as I find them to look less than the pictures I had in mind about the 16-bit generation and a bit slow on games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, I got an answered with no and they were perfect and exact same thing.
Now this VC thing matches what I have in mind and I think it is great, I would love to see screens from original snes screen compared to ROMs or VC

Re: Roms vs VC
Technically there shouldn't be much difference between Virtual Console and emulators, since Virtual Console is an emulator. What matters in terms of appearance is what scaling algorithm is used. Emulators, being hobby projects of highly technical people tend to have a lot of options as to what video filters are used. I can't even find out what video filter Virtual Console uses.
So here's how it is. If you consider highly filtered video to look "better" then you can probably get your emulator to look as good as or better than Virtual Console by playing with the video filters. Here's a good example of what a good video scaler will do:

Personally, I quite like the crisp, blocky appearance of old school consoles. But it's a matter of preference of course.

Re: Roms vs VC
I'm sure there are better emulators around than the one VC uses so Roms tend to look better.
Also note that a good emulator (not a simulator) will reproduce slowdowns if the original had them.

I have to agree. Pixels are the way to go. However, the boys at Georgia Tech have taken it a step further. See the link below:

This is proper attention to detail in emulation.

I like vc just not the paying part. as for good emulators leaving slowdown in I'd prefer an option to leave the slowdown in or "overclock" to get rid of it I like choices
Re: Roms vs VC
I am sure some appreciate the retro look, but if you appreciate it so much I guess you are better off with the real thing
I am against altering, I have seen modded levels and extreme smoothing of graphics which makes it look different, but in this case , the VC and I am talking about super metroid in specific, perfects the graphics at least in my own opinion

Re: Roms vs VC
You probably compare the graphics you saw on the TV at a 256x224 resolution with the graphics you see on the monitor, where the pixels' edges are much more apparent.
If you think VC looks better, you should try some filters the emulators have.

I don't like either. I have to play a game on it's original console to have fun with it.
You don't get the fuzzy glitchy graphics of Atari when you play on an emulator or anything beside an atari.
Not to mention, I just can't get into a game if it's not on the original system. I can play tetris for less than 5 min on an emulator, but I can play it for hours on the GB/NES.
