Games that defined the Xbox

Post by fast »

As you can imagine many of the forum regulars are collaborating on articles behind the scenes at all time. From new 101's to guides, alittle of everything. However sometimes we get stuck in a rut and need some help. Thats where yall come in. For the past few days we have been working on the Games that Define the Gamecube and Xbox and have hit a crossroads. So instead of alot of emails back and forth on the subject I thought I would just ask yall what games did you think defined these consoles.

List thus far:
Halo series
Dead or Alive series
Crimson Skies
PC Ports – ie Morrowind, Ghost Recon, etc
Enhanced PS2 Ports – ie GTA3, MGS2, etc
Riddick Butcher Bay
Steel Battalion
Tom Clancy titles – including Splinter Cell, Rainbow 6, and Ghost Recon
Brute Force
Kotor
Fable
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Jet Set Radio Future
Forza Motorsports
Project Gotham Racing Series
Mech Assault
Xbox Live/Xbox Live Arcade

But what is your take? And we are trying to stray from multiplatform titles, except those stated to be the best on the console.

The only thing that made the Xbox special was that it was a PC in a box. It was more powerful than the other consoles and had mostly PC ports.

I believe when you speak of games that defined the oXbox you really need to emphise Xbox Live. In my opinion this service saved Microsoft and defined gaming to where we are today.

For the first time games like Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six 3, and Brute Force you can extend the life of the game with downloadable content, exclusive features, and online play. And those are just a few. You also saw the future of direct sales with and the introduction of Xbox Live Arcade with a free demo disc and the option to download the games via Xbox Live.

I would be more then happy to expand upon this feature if necessary and my first hand experiance with Xbox Live in the first years ...

To me, and I only recently got an xbox, the games that defined the console were:

PC Ports
Halo series
KOTOR/Jade Empire
Fable
Games that were destined for the Dreamcast had it not been canned: i.e. Panzer Dragoon Orta, Shenmue II, JSRF, etc.
Steel Battalion
Dead or Alive Series

IMHO, anything that is multi-platform should not be considered "defining [insert console name here]" games. Even if they were not immediately available on other platforms at the time of release, if you can get enarly the same experience on another platform, then you can't say it was defining on one particular console. If we are talking games that define a generation, then multi-platform games would be part of the equation.
NES | SNES | Genesis | PSOne | Saturn | N64 | Dreamcast | Gamecube | XBox | PS2 Phat w/HDLoader | PS3 Slim| Wii
GBA SP | PSP-1000 | WiFi-iPad 16GB(Is this a game system?) | Modded PS1 | PS Vita 3G

Well, besides Halo and these are multiplatform, but sports games defined the xbox for me and a lot of people I know. The games looked better on the xbox and with a built in hard drive there was no need for multiple memory cards to save seasons, stats, etc and then of course there is xbox live. Just like the Genesis was the sports gaming machine of its generation, so was the xbox and I think that carried over to the 360.

yes. The star wars games on the xbox were great. Not only the two kotor games, but jedi outcast games were amazing too. And, if we are streching it a little, I really loved republic commandos too. I remember when the xbox came out and i was soooo anti Microsoft. I had just gotten my first mac and i didn't want to give Microsoft another cent. I held out for a while until kotor was released. Then finally broke down. The game was just too slick to pass up.

I would also say....

return to castle wolfenstein only becuase other than halo- it was the only other game my friends played online in college.
crimson skys

in the vein of dreamcast stuff that got released- the remake of the n64's conker's bad fur day
You could argue that the success of these re-released games gave birth to the idea of the current xbox live arcade. Giving us a platform for hd ramakes of older games at a discounted price. I don't know if there is any truth to that, or if it is just a happy coincidence, but it seems logical.

My list would go like this.

Halo 2 (based on what it did for Live)
Halo (based on being a system seller)
Crimson Skies
MechAssault
Ninja Gaiden
Star Wars: KOTOR
Fable
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Project Gotham Racing 2

This is my point exactly why it should it should be defined. When it came to the Xbox, PS2, Gamcube generation for the first time people DID pay attention to what games came out on what system. If it was crossed platformed I would choose Xbox first because of Xbox Live.
