Those dskins are useless on any system that uses a slot loader. They either snag or just don't work.
I do wish that games had stayed on cartridge medium, especially with how cheap flash storage is these days. Like Moz said, if only Nintendo hadn't submitted to peer pressure and stuck with the cartridges instead of going optical.

The cartridge format was killing Nintendo against the playstation. I remember when they released the players choice games at the "super low" 39.99. Everyone was like. . . that's the price for just released games on psx.
At the time they made the move to those mini-cds on gamecube it was 2001, and prices of SD cards and stuff hadn't bottomed out yet. Today sure you can get 8 gigs for $20, but not then. Nintendo was getting beaten by Sony, the PS2 had a one year lead, and the gamecube was getting launched the same time as the xbox, a company backed by a virtually endless stream of cash. Not to mention the dreamcast was still sitting on shelves for $49.99. They needed every ounce of profit they could get, so I can absolutely understand why they made the jump from cartridges.

I agree with you a bit Ryan, but I do find it odd that someone as young as you can get on a soapbox about how shitty they think disc based mediums are.
Anyway, I don't mind DVDs or CDs personally. I keep mine in good shape and cases are easily replaceable. I also like the fact my save games can be stored on a flash based memory card instead of relying on a battery. CDs and DVDs might have their share of issues, but I think it was inevitable they play a part in gaming. Look at the huge divide between PS1 and N64, that was mostly due to Nintendo's lack of foresight and sticking with cartridges.
Cartridges are still cool though (especially aesthetically), and I too would like to see future consoles have their games come on flash cards of some kind. Unfortunately I think companies are going to go the digital route and that is something I'd hate to see. It screams "disposable" and takes away something special from the art-form.

Well the problem with using flash or EPROM storage is that it's volatile, for example: power surges, blown fuses, kids pulling the cart out while the system is still on etc... would either corrupt or destroy the data stored on the cartridge. Plus even if it would be fine for a while long term problems begin to arise with flash storage such as bit rot and other issues where the data literally erases itself as it ages.
Nintendo and every other commercially licensed cart made by SEGA etc... used Hard Wired ROM's which are non volatile and permanent, the trade off for this though is that manufacturing of Hard Wired ROM's is extremely expensive as the games must be literally assembled.
That having been said I don't see discs as an issue where music and movies are concerned, as I like being able to watch a movie, or listen to a song as many times as I'd like without it becoming a static mess. Plus if you're so angry about getting scratches on your CD/DVD/Game collection etc... then you wouldn't even want to think about early pre-CD Analog disc storage mediums such as Vinyl and LaserDisc.

Personally, I've never had a problem with discs, aside from the obvious load-times on poorly optimized games. Then again, I've been rocking out with CDs since the 200 MHz Pentium came out, so I'm used to it. Just like with cassettes you never touch the magnetic tape I'm used to treating my discs with care. Of cousre, when I eventually get kids it might be a different story.
Yeah, then your 2 1/2 year old will want to physically change the movie in the DVD player and then is upset because Toy Story is skipping...

That's my problem too, with the additional problem of the fact that a download cannot become rare or valuable like an old game on physical media can.newt42 wrote:It's not CDs that bug me, it's the whole digital revolution that bugs the shit out of me. You can't show of your collection of files in a folder on a harddrive the same way you can show off a collection of carts and CDs.

Re: I hate CD's, DVD's, and anything that isn't tape or cart.
I grew up with both worlds. My cousin gave me his Genesis soon after I had gotten a Playstation and while the Genesis never did get used much, when it did it was always a pleasure, because the games actually worked. Being a young kid I didnt really pay attention much to the conditions of my discs, but I know that half of my collection stopped working around 1999 while the Genesis itself (model 1 which I found not too long ago) still works fine, as do games just as old as the system.Flak Beard wrote:I agree with you a bit Ryan, but I do find it odd that someone as young as you can get on a soapbox about how shitty they think disc based mediums are.![]()
Carts may be expensive etc. but they just work.
Older. Not wiser.
