Considering buying an OG xbox

Post by PGchris »

I found an Xbox with 27 games on craigslist for 45 bucks and I am considering buying it and keeping maybe four five games and making a good chunk of money back selling them at my local store. It would probably be really good deal but I'm not completely sold on the perks of owning an OG xbox as I have a 360. Are there any good xbox exclusives that aren't backwards compatible/ anybody else like their xbox and want to enlighten me to some of its perks. I do like the possibility of modding it with a bunch of emulators, do they run well?

I don't have a lot of experience with my xbox and the games I have for it, but I thought I would direct you to this article:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/a_xbo ... assics2006

It names some "cult classics" for the xbox, many of the games of which are pretty cheap. I keep an eye out for the games in that article when I go to CD/Game Exchange. You'll also notice that for each posting it says "Compatible with Xbox 360?" - Quite a few of them are not. I'd say go for it, at the end of the day its only $45.

Did you see the ad for a modded gamecube:
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/ ... 81439.html

Its a great deal, I mean hell its got a case mod, comes with a wavebird, and its got twin snakes and a couple other okay games. I emailed him and he did the soldering himself and I would buy it, but I really can't justify another gamecube, even if it is modded. I've got a black boxed one that looks like day one, and a new platinum one I just picked up from gamestop.

The only really good game I can think off the top of my head that you can't play on the 360 is Jet Set Radio Future. A shame you can't play it on the 360, I liked it more than the original Dreamcast version. Actually, I think most of the Sega Xbox exclusives aren't playable (Panzer Dragoon, Toejam & Earl, Sega GT). Not sure if that's enough to keep an original Xbox for you.

Actually so others can see the list I'll name all the ones in the above article I linked to that are not compatible with the 360. The article is from 2006, but I don't think compatibility has changed much.

Psychonauts
Beyond Good & Evil
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Kung Fu Chaos
MechAssault
Fahrenheit
Secret Weapons Over Normandy
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee
Freedom Fighters
Voodoo Vince
Indiana Jones & The Emperor's Tomb
Jet Set Radio Future
Midtown Madness 3
Shenmue 2
Otogi: Myth of Demons
GunValkyrie
Armed & Dangerous
Arx Fatalis
Crimson Sea
Racing Evoluzione
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Sniper Elite
Grabbed by the Ghoulies
Toejam & Earl III: Mission to Earth
Breakdown
OutRun 2
OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast
Mashed and Mashed: Fully Loaded
Psi Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Second Sight
Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller
Steel Battalion
Star Wars Republic Commando
Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes

I'd say that is a pretty hefty list of reasons to keep an OG Xbox. I can't vouch for every game, but if something like Buffy the Vampire Slayer strikes you as odd check out the article.

The benefit is that with a modded xbox, and running games off the harddrive, it doesn't sound like a damn helicopter is taking off in your living room every time the disc drive kicks in. Plus faster load times, downloading games, emulators, xbmc etc.

Thanks thats an awesome article man. I think I'm leaning towards just biting the bullet and getting it, even though I'm trying to save money for a summer trip, and yea I did see that gamecube and I probably would buy it if I wasn't basically broke. But yea the Otogi games, Oddworld strangers wrath, Painkiller which I actually just bought not realizing it wasnt 360 compatible, Mechassault, Gunvalkyrie are all seem like really good games exclusive to the OG xbox. Also I seriously love adventure games and there is Broken Sword, Syberia and Dreamfall that are all supposed to be good exclusives.

I would definitely jump on buying an original Xbox for the games listed and other great uses the system offers like modding, great classic games, etc... 8)
