Classicgaming.com

I saw this today. Apparently IGN is shutting down it's free hosting services, and with it tons of great info will disappear. Of course, a lot of the content is old and abandoned, but so are the games. Real shame to see this, I may have to brush up on my wget skills.

That really stinks. I would hate to see something like HG101 go by the wayside. I might have to archive their site to a local drive if possible, as I'm always going back to read up on their articles.

I can't even access HG101 anymore, all I'm getting is a maintenance error.

It looks like at least HG101 will be moving to another server. I'd imagine most sites that are currently updated would find hosting elsewhere. A lot of sites have been largely abandoned, there's not a lot of new news on a 20 year old game after all. But these sites still represent a lot of work, and a lot of information you can't get anywhere else.

Looking at the list of sites hosted, it doesn't look like it would be terribly hard to wget them all. They all have their own virtual domain which is helpful. I'll see what I can do with wget, and probably post an archive to underground gamer. There's almost 2 months between now and when it goes offline, so there's plenty of time.

Really, there's no reason for these websites to get deleted for good. Getting a host nowadays is so cheap and easy they might as well just ask the readers to do the work.

I talked to Kurt at HG101 last week. Many of the bigger sites like his are working out other hosting arrangements and are working on getting things transitioned. If all goes well, you'll just have to update your bookmarks.

Yeah, I know the Metroid Database is going to be moving to a new host as well.
