I myself was the victim to the "reset power" save loss. I had a friend who didn't have Zelda play it a my house and he did not hold reset when powering off, and one of the times it wiped my cartridge's memory.

is that a technique for properly saving? I've never heard of that before.

I've never heard of that either. Can anyone confirm if this method works?

I've actually seen a couple games that state this. In Final Fantasy, the inn keeper always tells you to "hold reset when you turn power off". I believe that Zelda 2 told you to do it as well, but with that game I think your saves were in jeopardy no matter what you did.

Plus, doesn't it have to to with a battery in the cartridge? This game is pretty old and has been through the ringer so maybe that is what happened. This last move may have been the straw that broke the camel's glass house... that doesn't seem right...

Yeah, totally. As time goes on, the batteries just get burnt out and function less and less. By the time my copy of Zelda 2 was through, it was no longer able to save. I really resented that.
