Yeah I know it's not a typical fighter, but it's still good. I actually liked the whole stop/start thing. I liked the slower pace, it meant you could dominate poor opponents better and it punished you for button mashing.
I think I prefer the points system because you can win with well placed throws or specials regardless of how much health you have left. It does kinda suck when it's just 1 point rounds all the time, it's a long way to 8 points that way.

Just stay away from the edge. The computer has a nasty habit of falling off, catching itself, then grabbing your ankle and pulling you off for several points. That's caused me to lose more times than any other move in that game.

There are lots of innovative, great games for the Saturn. And if you mod it, your collection builds up real quick.

If you like 3D, Platformers and FPS, Nintendo 64 is definitely the way to go. There's Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Rayman 2, Mystical Ninja, Donkey Kong 64, Bomberman Hero, Jet Force Gemini, etc. These all suit your tastes in one way or another, and that's not even mentioning all the other great games that fall into other genres.
And as others have said, it will be easier and cheaper to track these down, especially compared to some of the Saturn's classics.

That's a good point. Although the N64 has probably the most lop-sided library of any popular console (very lackluster lineup of fighting games and RPGs), there were a number of other genres that the console did excel in. Aside from platformers and FPSes, the N64 had a fantastic lineup of non-sim racing games, 3D shooters/flying games, arcade-ish sports games, and multi-player party games in general. Some that are definitely worth playing...
Racing games: Wave Race 64 (just about my favorite racing game of all time), F-Zero X, Diddy Kong Racing, 1080 Snowboarding, Ridge Racer 64, San Francisco Rush/Rush 2/2049, Excitebike 64, and Beetle Adventure Racing.
Flying/shooting games: Star Fox 64, Pilotwings 64, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Sports/Fake sports: International Superstar Soccer 64/'98 (best soccer game in history), Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, NFL Blitz, All Star Baseball '98/'99, and Wrestlemania 2000/WCW/nWo Revenge (even if you hate wrestling games)
Multiplayer: the aforementioned THQ wrestling games, Mario Kart 64, and of course, N64 Smash Bros, are still some of the best multi-player games you can get.
Finally, the N64 also has a surpisingly decent selection of puzzle games (Tetrisphere, Wetrix, Pokemon Puzzle League). Oh, and if you like games where you drive around and blow stuff up, get Blast Corps. and Vigilante 8. And before I forget, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire is mostly an action game and is one of the most under-appreciated N64 games ever. I'd highly recommend it.
