I like i-tunes a lot, but it's been bugging me lately because they keep adding more and more crap to it. I like the new Genius thing, but there's a bunch of extra BS in the latest i-Tunes versions that I don't want. I hope they tone it down a bit so they don't become the next bloatware failure like Real Player, who also put so much annoying shit into their player that it collapsed on itself.

Still, i-tunes is far better for than Windows Media Player. God that thing runs slow. I use i-tunes for organizing and playing all my albums, but if I want to just play an MP3 by itself or any video content, I use VLC media player instead. It's free, it's simple, and it does the job quickly.

Cursing really needed? I find the Zune to be much better with everything, including the store, unlimited downloads for 15 dollars is amazing. I also love the fact it has an AM/FM tuner in it :) .

The Zune is probably my favorite mp3 player, I just like the interface and the feel of the player and touchpad/clickypad. I don't like the wheel on the ipod. However I ended up with a creative zen because of the price of the "name brand" mp3 players.

The Zune is a fucking joke. Anyone who buys one is an idiot.
I love my Zune, of course mine was given to me for free. Would I buy one? If the price was better then a Ipod, sure.

It does what it needs to do, it gets my podcasts and plays my music and does a decent job of doing videos too.

I'm a happy idiot. :)
Ditto. It does everything I need it to do, and I got a great deal on it.
Comics, RPG's, miniatures, and now retrogaming? I guess its time to learn to go without eating...

I recently switched to an iPod since I had the opportunity to buy a Blizzard branded one. It's nice for the 10 minute walk to work, since it's small and turns on/off instantly (since it's really a suspend). But I still think my Creative Vision W is the superior player. It's got a huge screen (about PSP size) which is great for watching movies. And the software for loading it up is nice and simple. You get two file lists, kind of like in WinSCP, and you find your music in one window and the player in the other window, and hit copy. Every time I go to load music onto the iPod I feel like I'm wrestling with the damn interface. I know exactly the songs I want to move, why can't I just select them from a list and copy?

Also, I thought it was agreed back in the mid 90's that Winamp was the best MP3 player if your goal is to listen to music.

Indeed. Winamp was and continues to be hands down the best music player for Windows. I started using it in the mid 90s and have never switched to anything else, despite trying lots of other music software. I think the last few iterations have added some really nice features, as well.

I have some interest in the Zune HD , as I HATE iPods and iTunes - I don't like all the proprietary tech in the iPod and iTunes is the must useless piece of resource-hogging bloatware I have ever installed (and quickly uninstalled). I currently am just using a small Samsung YP-F1 player that works great, but I am generally pretty unhappy with most of the larger-capacity players I've used.

One question about these touch players, though - how do you skip forward/back or adjust volume, pause, etc. if there are no buttons on the player? When it's in my pocket, I certainly don't want to have to pull it out and turn it on to tap the screen every time I want to skip a track....

That's your only option. With the iPod touch it's hit the black button on the top of the unit, slide the bar, then you get touch controls. Theoretically you could operate it in your pocket, but it's not as good as having buttons on the outside to skip.

It's not a big issue for me when I use mine, since it's only for the short 10-minute walks where I'll only hear three songs anyway, but for any long-term music playing I use my Creative. Huzzah for buttons!
