Deus Ex- does it stand the test of time?
Deus Ex- does it stand the test of time?
Many PC lovers claim Deus Ex is one of the greatest PC games of all time. I'm thinking I will buy it off of Steam since it's only 10 clams, but I have also spent a lot of money on gaming lately and I'm wondering if you all think it has stood the test of time? Is this game still great, or have other more recent games like Bioshock done what Deus Ex did, only better? Obviously the graphics have aged, but I can probably look past that.

Re: Deus Ex- does it stand the test of time?
I played this when it first came out - and really really dug the multiple ways you could go about things. I too was wondering if I'd feel the same way replaying it. I haven't played many games like it since.. so I can't tell you how it compares to those. If you've never played it before, and can look past its aged graphics.. I think you'll be surprised at a really cool game. I wasn't aware it is on Steam for only a tenner... so now I'm tempted to relive the experience and see if it lives up to what I remember.

Everyone on this board has absolutely no excuse for picking up Deus Ex at $10. The only thing that modern games have on it is a prettier graphics engine. Deus Ex has a very immersive storyline and genuinly fun gameplay. You really do have the freedom to get through a level through whichever means you want. You can go in guns blazing, you can go crazy stealth, hell, you can go through the game with only a single NPC dying (he has a drop that is required to get through a door). It has the perfect fusion of an FPS and an RPG. Fallout 3 makes a good effort at it, but Deus Ex does it better. You get the Diablo-style inventory and a skill and augmentation system that just begs for multiple playthroughs to get the most out of it.
I think the biggest thing that Deus Ex does right that Fallout 3 fails at is the indication of your aiming ability. With Fallout 3 you get the static reticle and your shots will hit random areas based upon weapon condition and your skills. With Deus Ex you get an adaptive reticle, and you know that your shots will fall within the reticle. If you stand still for a few seconds the reticle tightens. If you dump points into the appropriate skill you can improve your accuracy to the point of getting Quake-style point and click death.
My recommendation would be to play through it once to get the original version, then download the Shifter mod for your second playthrough. Shifter adds just enough that I wouldn't recommend it for your first go, but it really freshens up the game (great for people who've played through 5+ times).

Ive tried numerous times to get into it and just can't. I don't know what it is
That said, a lot of games these days have bothered me. Couldn't finish Bioshock, Okami, No More Heroes, Mirror's Edge. Yeah maybe its me.

Deus Ex is essential. I don't consider a PC Gamer to be a PC Gamer until they have at least played it.
And, sad as it is, I will think less of a person if they say the disliked it. I can't help it.
Deus Ex is one of the best PC games I've played. Last time I replayed it was about 3-4 years ago, and it was still gravy. Loved it, and will continue to love it. It's like the Guardian Heroes of the PC world - a wonderful blend of genres with replay value out the freakin' wazoo.

Alright, alright! You've all guilted me in to buying it! (not that I really needed much of a push. It was in my shopping cart as I made the thread).

It's one of the finest games ever made.
Re: Deus Ex- does it stand the test of time?
I found it to be terribly overrated much like Bioshock. I've given it half a dozen chances since release it and I just cant get past the 30 minute mark. It's too boring. RPG elements just don't belong in FPS. They always ruin it. The one exception is Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
Re: Deus Ex- does it stand the test of time?
30 minutes is a bit soon to be declaring a game overrated. If it helps, think of it as an action RPG like Zelda or Morrowind with guns. Typical FPS action is not the point.
