It does get kinda boring, though. I found there just wasn't enough going on at times, or that what was going on was too repetitive. Game should have been... *gasp* ...a little shorter. I know, that's heresy in gaming circles these days.

I hear you there. Whenever I go back to it, I just play the short game. The weapon system is rather broken too, some weapons are clearly better than others. But, well, it's easy, if only to play some levels.

I found Parodius Da on SNES to be quite easy when I was first getting into SHMUPs. Just turn the difficulty down a little bit and crank up the lives. Really fun game.

Ikaruga and Triggerheart exelica have easy modes. Karous is pretty easy after you get the hang of it.

do not try gradius on nes. Its hard. very very hard.

Zero Wing is pretty easy before the final stage. (it's kind of like a newb-friendly Gradius) The game gives you unlimited continues, so you don't have to worry about lives.

Raiden III has a good difficulty curve, the beginning's really easy with the game gradually getting harder as you get closer and closer to the end.

I haven't beaten it, (only played the demo) but 1942: Joint Strike seems pretty easy. (there's a health bar)

Here's another thread with some suggestions
http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6020&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

Good suggestions so for and a few more I'd point out-
Steel Empire - genesis (life bar, tons of power ups)
Bio Metal - snes (shield/absorb, powerful weapons)
Robo Aleste - Sega CD (except a few areas, good learning curve)

The Macross shooter for the saturn / psx is really easy and cool. It's more centered on adapting the series into a game than bullet patterns and such so many consider it a sub par shooter but I loved it. It's quite cinematic.

I also play Ikaruga on the easiest setting and get my ass kicked. I will admit I haven't put as much time into it as I could though, because the straight memorization games just don't always hold my attention.

I've ordered Raiden Fighters Aces from Amazon. I'm hoping it will strike the right balance for me. I would like to play more shmups.

I keep hoping Trigger Heart or Omega Five will be the "deal of the week" on XBLA one of these weeks, but they're pretty niche so I'm not holding my breath.
