Man, if the Xbox 360 2.0 can finally eliminate Red Ring, I'll have to drop the cash for it. If it's region free (I can dream, can't I?), I won't even need to import one from Japan.
Anyway, I just went to one of the GSs, and the dude there said they won't be dropping PS2 anytime, seeing as PS2 is responsible for most of their profit. All of the PS2 games were still about $15 too, so no "10 for $30" deals to be had on my end.
Of course, he could just be saying what the corp wants to say - I'll have to ask one of my manager-friends if he knows anything.
GameStop to cease selling/trading GBA, GCN. and PS2.

PS2 is only responsible for about 15-20% company profit, with both GCN and GBA in the single digits.

Well, he might have been talking about that particular store.
Plus, I'd say 15-20% is nothing to sneeze at.

It is for us at GS, all corporate would have to do would be to raise the price on Used current gen games by a buck or two to absorb the loss. Don't forget PS1 was still pulling in the same numbers as PS2 is now when they pulled the plug.

Personally, I think they're nuts to stop selling PS2 games this early, but I'm sure Game Crazy and every other used game store out there will be happy to pick up the pieces GameStop leaves behind.

While it is early and a little premature I see corp probably pushing the date forward to a later time.

Re: GameStop to cease selling/trading GBA, GCN. and PS2.
It has less to do with PS2's remaining popularity, and more to do with the fact that they can rip people off much better with current gen titles. All these used PS2 games are like generally 5-15 dollars, so they can't make much money reselling them. Modern games on the other hand, they can turn 25-35 dollars of pure profit with each turnaround.J T wrote:Personally, I think they're nuts to stop selling PS2 games this early, but I'm sure Game Crazy and every other used game store out there will be happy to pick up the pieces GameStop leaves behind.

I can't wait until their entire business dies off with the coming age of digital distribution.
Re: GameStop to cease selling/trading GBA, GCN. and PS2.
They've already joined the age of digital distribution though. You can download games direct from their website (and for more money than you would pay to buy the hard copy in a GameStop. They've been learning from other digital distributors).

Re: GameStop to cease selling/trading GBA, GCN. and PS2.
I'm aware of that, but it's been a failure so far, and I don't think they have the ability to compete with the big boys in this field. Not unless they somehow buy their way into a system that MS, Sony, Nintendo, and such all cooperate on, which would allow customers to sell their digital games. Of course this would never happen, because every developer would throw a massive fit (right or wrong).J T wrote:They've already joined the age of digital distribution though. GS doesn't have the dirty angle here that they had in retail that made them so successful.

True enough. Unless they are shady enough to start selling used digital copies.Mozgus wrote: GS doesn't have the dirty angle here that they had in retail that made them so successful.
