Playstation physical disc production ending Jan 2028

I know right now you can buy basically code cards for Switch games. The main problem is that they don't display well and catch the eye.

I'm still somewhat interested in picking up a PS5, but no discs at all for the next system means I'm probably out.
Feel bad for the mom and pop game stores that won't be able to sell used games for the current systems, and for the kids that won't have the excitement of going to a store with their family or friends to pick up a new game.
...this pretty much sums it up for me. It's been odd to watch gaming change so much and also realize so many choose convenience over ownership. Other than buying a Switch 2 before the price goes up, I'm not sure what's next. Leaning into the Evercade, AES+, and 7800+ seem like wins, but maybe I should finally get started on NES and SNES collecting. Either way, despite all the outcry, I don't see Sony changing course. MS has wanted to do this for a while, but I wonder if they'll take time to read the room...I'm not holding my breath though.

In regard to modern consoles, we were recently given a PS4, which was owned by a friend who was going to toss it after getting a PS5. He was nice enough to wipe the system too. I'd like to pick up a few games for it, especially co-op stuff. Other than that, we have a regular Switch but I'd like to get a Switch OLED and potentially a PS5.
In regard to retro stuff, I'm also very interested in the Neo Geo AES+, and I think I'll end up pulling the trigger on it. Very cool to see some of these games get re-released with nice packaging and manuals.
There's a lot of retro consoles I'd like to continue to build up my library for, so for me, it won't have too much of an impact, but in general, I still think it stinks for modern gaming.

Even though I've never purchased a physical PS5 game, this really pisses me off!
I get the appeal of digital-only, if only by virtue of being able to buy games without having to go to the nearest retailer (an hour away) or wait days for the game to ship from an online store. But I still prefer physical media over exclusively being digital. At least with physical media, I have the option of tracking down a second-hand physical copy of a delisted game. But the problem is that so many don't have that! When the two Steven Universe games got delisted, I wasn't able to get the final game. Conversely, I was able to score a copy of Transformers: Devastation for PS4 after finding out it was delisted.
And it's not just games. Movies and TV are all pivoting to streaming, with only boutique labels like The Criterion Collection, Arrow, Shout Factory and the like staying in the game. Meanwhile, there's entire swaths of films and shows without any physical release, many of which are basically gone if/when it gets removed from streaming. Up until a few months ago, Tales From the Crypt was only available on DVD, so if the DVDs go out of print and Shudder loses the streaming rights, the show's pretty much impossible to watch. Well, at least legally.
In the case of movies and TV, that's why I always try to spring for a physical release. If I can't stream Dawn of the Dead, at least I can watch it on 4K. And if entire chunks of Are You Afraid of the Dark aren't on Paramount+, then at least I have that box set I found on eBay last year. And up until recently, the only way I could watch Over the Garden Wall in HD was to either stream it on Prime Video (where I bought it) or on a bootleg Blu-ray I bought from a site that also had a Beavis and Butt-Head King Turd Collection set, all the Guinea Pig films, the Cabal Cut of Nightbreed and Necronomicon: The Book of the Dead. And yes, I would replace each and every single one of those with legit copies when they're no longer OOP.
