Attempting to fix a Jakks Pacific Ms Pac Man plug-and-play

Post by opa »

I've been collecting a few of these plug-and-play systems recently. One of which is this Ms Pac Man unit made by Jakks Pacific (dated 2004 on the bottom). It features Ms Pac Man, Xevious, Mappy, Galaga, and Pole Position. The cool thing about this little system is that the knob on the control stick can actually be turned to drive the car in Pole Position. However, there's a problem as you can tell by the title of the thread.

I get no video output when connected to a television. At first I thought it wasn't working at all, but after clicking the buttons a few times I could hear Ms Pac Man start up. So there's still some hope I can fix this thing. I took it apart and got to work.

In the second image you can see the guts and the PCB. I used my multimeter to start some continuity tests. I had continuity from the battery wire on the PCB (on the left in the pic) to the battery terminals - so power was apparently good in that stretch of the board. Then I tested the audio. Audio had continuity in both the live middle shaft of the plug and the grounded outer shield.

Video was not successful... which I figured it wouldn't be. No continuity for live or ground on the plug.

So now I get to take this thing apart further and see what I can do to fix it. At best it'll be replacing the video wire (which I feel will be fairly simple). At worst I'll have to examine all the little resistors, capacitors, and what-not to see if anything is broken or loose.

Hopefully the next update will be good news.

Always fun.

I would follow with what you said and the first thing I would do is a grab an old RCA cable, strip the end. Solder the video out (inner wire) and ground (the outer braid) and just see if you get video out from that. Would take a couple of minutes and easy to test.

Is there damage on joints (corrosion, etc), hard to see but that reset solder looks pretty messed up. The VDD wire looks like its broken near the solder as well, but again hard to see.

Yeah, I'm doing the easy route first; just waiting on the solder braid to get here then I can get to work.

Yes, my image isn't the clearest. That's my bad.
I didn't see any broken lines or joints on my first inspection. I'll check again when I get it back out.
