So wanted to provide an update on Atari Jaguar Doom Slayer Edition for anyone not following over on Atari Age. Slow & steady but progressing along. Jaguar Doom really is already a top tier console port already (compare it to 32X, 3DO, & SNES FX), and it just keeps getting better!
Editions we know of:
- Music now plays in game
- Pro Controller shoulder button staffing
- Restored missing PC levels
-> Additional Episode(s)?
- Additional Textures
- Spectre Demons now translucent
- Cyber Mastermind added
-> & Cyberdemon added (?) per some screenshots & dev comments but working on animations
- Cheat menu
- "JWAD" support

Re: The DOOM Thread
This appears to be hot off the press so wanted to share!
DOOM CD 32X Fusion v1.0 - YouTube
Doom 1 & 2 on the Genesis! ... well the Tower of Power
. This is an evolution of the previous 32X project.
They're using CD texture storage. I need to watch Austin's stream linked, but looks to be all of Ultimate Doom (including Thy Flesh Consumed), most of Doom II (minus a couple enemies), & even a portion of TNT as a bonus.
Really is amazing to see what these passionate hobbyist have done. I wish the Wolf 3D proof of concept on Genesis would get some more love also.

Re: The DOOM Thread
That's actually pretty awesome! I wonder if someone will figure out how to run mods with this. Obviously, it'll probably be a step down from how the PC version can run them, with more work and less compatibility.
Anyone check out DOOMablo? It adds randomized weapons and armors (and at some point they added backpacks) in a manner similar to Borderlands and Diablo.
It pairs up nicely with GAYhem 2024, a community project made to celebrate the LGBTQ+ Doom community. But then again, I'm probably namedropping GAYhem 2024 because I myself am gay and love Doom.
It also works well with DBP68: Outposts Of The Wasteland, which has a post-apocalypse vibe akin to Mad Max and Borderlands.

Re: The DOOM Thread
Know it's long, but in the stream Austin does mention wanting to create custom maps to show off & it's doable today.
With textures to pull from stored on CD, not sure how full blown mods would work though. It's currently a combo cart (flash cart) + CD set up.
Actually really cool feat by itself there. To my knowledge only the 2nd game leverage the cart slot & CD attachment together outside of Pier Solar (for streaming Red Book audio as option).
Funny... as a kid, I actually thought this is how the Sega CD was going to work, in a combo CD & cart setup. My cousin got one & it blew my mind seeing games run straight off CD with no cart ... 20 years later, these devs proving me right

Re: The DOOM Thread
Lost a huge post, since there's something so weird about logging into this board I guess.
I'll just say Legacy of Rust is a a complete wonky mess to me and pretty disappointing. I'd only give it like a 6/10 at best. Not a megawad I'll bother to replay. Plenty of other better ones. Chalk the Sigil's up to being more "official" expansions since they're Romero map sets and the old XBLA/PSN No Rest for the Living is excellent. But this was a big letdown. It's kind of everything I don't like about modern Doom megawads. There's so much better stuff out there.
The music is excellent at least.

Re: The DOOM Thread
I was pretty disappointed with Rust too. So much so that I didn't get past the second map. The first map had that really cool portal at the end, which was amazingly awesome. But other than that, the first level was kinda meh. It felt more like something out of TNT. The second level had such a huge jump in difficulty that it felt more like Plutonia, and I mean that in a bad way. I restarted on Hurt Me Plenty, but the level design (of the first two levels) just didn't do anything for me so I stopped playing.
Re: The DOOM Thread
You got out easy Ziggy, lol.
I noted a few sparse maps that I liked:
E1M5-7
E2M4-5
So 5 maps out of 16 or whatever it was, barely liked a third of this whole expansion. On one hand maybe I shouldn't default to UV like I do thesedays, but I've been casually playing megawads for years now and can usually manage well enough, even with some GOOD stuff that can get a little slaughter-ish (like Skillsaw megawads, those are excellent). Rust was just a complete incoherent mess though. Even visually it made no sense level to level.
I didn't hate the flamethrower like some did. But I did think the flame barons were kind of lame. The floating skulls died fast and didn't do a ton of damage at least. The new spiderdemon and Tyrant/Cyberdemon were pretty forgettable. Again, I've seen better new weapons/monsters in other mods.
Ziggy: If you haven't, I say definitely check out No Rest for the Living. Lot of techbases and they kind of feel like Doom E1 but with bigger maps and the full Doom 2 roster. I will gladly replay that set of levels over and over again like I have with all the new ports of Doom that come with it now lol.
I love the Sigil's and can see how some even like them more than E4. They can be tough, but fair I say.
I haven't really looked at the mod selection of this new port yet, but I've seen some I already played. I think I'll still opt to play my old Doom 2 install with GZDoom and all. Something about this port did feel off to me at times, the lighting was darker, etc. Works well with controllers if I'm ever in the mood for that though. I did another run of Doom 2 to hear the music at least. I'm a TNT defender but I'm not sure when I can stomach another full replay. Also I do like Plutonia and have some a full Pistol Star / UV completion of it now... but good lord, I really gotta be in the mood for that. lol

Re: The DOOM Thread
Has anyone tried Wadfusion? It's the successor to Wadsmoosh and supports Legacy of Rust, mashing up all the major IWADs into a single handy-dandy IPK3.
Re: The DOOM Thread
Oh, I love No Rest for the Living! I think it was included with DOOM 3 (?) on Steam, so I got the WAD that way and played it with gzdoom. It was excellent. I've played through it a couple of times at this point.Xeogred wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 3:22 pm Ziggy: If you haven't, I say definitely check out No Rest for the Living. I also loved SIGIL, but I've only played the first one so far. I have the second, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Re: The DOOM Thread
Recently got back into playing Doom mods. As usual, trying to pair up as many mods as humanly possible.
I recently found that a combination of the Doosk weapons mod (Dusk weapons in Doom) and Blood monsters pack (from Blood, obviously) with a music mod I found that has a bunch of random-ass metal songs (all seemingly with the lyrics stripped out) really works with a handful of Doomer Board Project that have a creepy or gothic aesthetic. And before you ask... DBP29: Morbid Autumn, DBP49: Mausoleum Nefarium, DBP62: Haunting Hollow, DBP65: Sanguine Holy Land and the Ad Mortem community project.
I've also done something similar with the Ashes monster pack and weapons pack, which definitely fit VERY well with map packs that feature post-apocalyptic settings (like DBP68: Outposts of the Wasteland), war-torn cities (like CoD-inspired DBP58: Immortal Warfare) or manmade structures being reclaimed by the environment (like DBP50: Emerald City). I've also experimented with the Obsidian Map Generator and the end results has been... adequate. Mostly, I was just looking for more maps to throw the Ashes weapons and monster packs, but sadly I can't seem to find any texture mods to swap out the vanilla textures with a more apropos aesthetic. The Duke Nukem 3D texture mod I've found kind of does the job... mostly. TBH, I was expecting something more akin to the Hollywood Holocaust level.
Other than that, I gotta point out that the GAYhem community project has some time ago had its second release candidate. Naturally, I'm not playing it as-is. FYI, DOOMablo and Bring Your Own Class, the latter using the GZDoom version and not the more up-to-date Zandorum version.
