That's one thing for me, a computer nerd. But it's another for my parents, who would probably have no idea if updates ceased. Or worse, if Microsoft pushed out an update that detects if those checks are missing and locks you out of the OS.

For me, now that I think about it, maybe I'll just rebuild that PC. I upgraded the CPU in my main desktop earlier this year, so I have a "free" Ryzen 2700X. And that old PC has a more recently purchased PSU and HDDs. All I'd really need to get is a motherboard and RAM.

I don't think they will remove the functionally to actually use the OS as MS themselves have put in the ability to remove some of the checks themselves. They want people on their OS, in their eco system, etc.

For me, at this juncture, it's not "can I make Windows 11 work?" - it's "do I really want to use Windows 11?" That's my conundrum.

For me, there's just too many games and programs that don't have Linux ports. There's WINE and virtual machines, but those can be a real time sink and there's still some things that you can't run well or at all.

Microsoft excels at alternating operating systems people are OK with with ones nobody wants. And then leaving many folks no choice in the matter.

That's cool. You gotta use what works for your needs.

So true. I'd be fine if they kept 10. I don't see anything wrong with it, myself.

Out of a curiously, what is it about Windows 11 that you dislike that is not present in Windows 10? They are fundamentally the same operating system, they even share the same kernal (v10.0). I could understand if things like core isolation turned you off, but it can be disabled in Windows 11.

You do you, just wondering.

They decided to make the taskbar objectively worse by removing customization options like keeping window titles, instead of collapsing it to just the icon. You can fix it with third party modifications, but those break once in a while after a system update.

They added the ability to toggle on and off icon grouping and labels in the taskbar in an update about 12 months ago. Why it was absent from the start, who knows.

The task bar and start menu would be my biggest complaint. 7's start menu is still probably my favorite, but at least 10 is customizable. Why they feel the need to force UI changes on you, without the ability to customize it, is just beyond me. Also, I feel like the search bar in the start menu prioritizes internet results rather than local ones. Granted, I have limited use with 11 since I don't currently have it on one of my own machines. But from the times I've used it, this is what I've found. And to be fair, 10 kinda does this as well, but 11 seems to make it worse. Is there an option to have that search bar NOT search the internet? Because that would be my preference.

The internet seems to love drama, so I don't know which things are blown out of proportion, but it seems like 11 spies on you a lot more than 10. That alone is probably the biggest reason I haven't upgraded from 10. And it's pretty much bullshit that you need a secret work around to set it up with a local account versus and online MS account.

I'm with you, opa. I'd be fine sticking with 10. But I also would have been fine sticking with 7. I actually only upgraded to 10 when they dropped support for 7.

There might be a few things I would like about 11 though. For example, tabbed explorer windows. Linux has this, and so does 11. After using it in Linux, I really miss this feature in 10. I have to open up multiple explorer windows, like damn caveman! I'm sure there's some 3rd party tweak for 10 to add explorer tabs, but I generally don't like to mess around with third party OS tweaks (or at least, as few as possible).

That said, Open Shell looks pretty cool. But if there's the potential for it to break with updates, that's such a pain in the ass. However, I've always hated the combined/collapse task bar icons. And having the start button and open windows CENTERED in the task bar just drives me nuts! I'm not sure if I could ever get use to 11's taskbar and start menu.
