I loved Cowboy Bebop but didn’t at all care for Samurai Champloo. Wolf’s Rain tells a very good story, though there’s a block of like 4 summary/recap episodes in a row that really kill momentum. But the characters, story, and music are all fantastic. Macross Plus is also recommended, though it might be hard to find since the rights are a bit up in the air for US release right now. It’s only 4 episodes and very well-produced.

A couple years ago I was starting to kind of watch some anime again for the first time in well over a decade. What I came away with is that, yeah, anime is for a younger demo that I haven't been a part of for a long time, and I'm not really into it. (To be fair, Japanese games are mostly made for the same type of demo.)

Anyway, the list of stuff I like is pretty narrow, and I think there might be some significant overlap with your tastes:

- GitS (specifically, I like Stand Alone Complex and Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig even more than I like the first two movies)
- Anything Satoshi Kon (Millennium Actress and Paprika are my personal favorites, but Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent, and Tokyo Godfathers are also very good)
- Blue Sub no. 6 (I rewatched this during that time a couple years ago; It's still good, but I'm also a big fan of Renge Murata's art)
- Tomino Gundam (I only really like the original series, Zeta, and Char's Counterattack, though)
- On a related note, Hathaway's Flash is fucking amazing. I actually bought the Japanese BluRay release, and all three of the original Tomino novels.
- Kino's Journey (I mostly read the light novel series, but the original anime series is still pretty good. I watched the new anime series a couple years ago and hated it, though)
- I still love Spirited Away

Some other stuff I was watching a couple years ago:

- Shenmue: The Animation (as an adaptation, I thought it was pretty meh, and the animation isn't particularly great, but I still kind of liked it)
- Last Exile (I really liked this when I first saw it in high school; More Renge Murata, but it's not as good as I remember it being. The sequel series was very disappointing)
- My Dress-up Darling (Turned into a guilty pleasure pretty quickly. It's high school rom-com stuff. I ended up getting all the manga that was released at the time, since I typically prefer the print media.)

Stuff I haven't watched since around high school, but feel like could be good still:

- Boogiepop Phantom and Serial Experiments Lain

That's about all I've got. There are a couple other guilty pleasure rom-com/sitcom things like Ranma 1/2 and Here is Greenwood that I think I might personally still enjoy. Apparently Ranma 1/2 has a new series coming out soon, like the Urusei Yatsura reboot from a while ago.

100% on both counts. I can kind of enjoy some stuff for a younger crowd (not just these two, but also some movies and music, too), but in general, it's not something I seek out or thoroughly enjoy.

Thanks for the recs, all. I was hammered when I wrote that post, so I'm glad I wasn't too incoherent.

I'm watching Golden Kamuy right now and it's fucking awesome - very much recommended.

The Crunchyroll app however.... It doesn't play the correct subtitles when you're watching the dub (on Roku). Makes for some scenes to just be unintelligible Russian for two straight minutes at times. Terrible.

Re: Vampire Hunter D; Back in the day I used them as reference for new areas in my online Castlevania project, and I didn't really like how they aged. Doubt I'd enjoy them again.

I found the search for that one MP3 Justin Whang did in 2020 entertaining - attributed to Vampire Hunter D, Malice Mizer, Gackt, among others; Just background music from Vampire Princess Miyu OVA - "Armored Apparition’s Time of Death". I wasn't the first to point it out, but I knew it right away. I used to watch so many vampire-related anime and movies. The anime mostly all have not aged well IMO.

Re: Crunchyroll's horrible subs and timing - yeah, what a headache! I have a growing pile of shows to add to my server that are broken, and I have to remux multiple releases and fix timing on many of them just to make them up-to-snuff. I don't have enough time to deal with this problem, despite being unemployed and without responsibilities! I'm going to have to buy yet another hard drive to hold the bloated mess of broken anime releases :P

I'm actually searching for someone who would take a couple of commissions to properly time subtitles in some specific anime, just so I don't have to do it myself. I can do basic stuff, but I can't be arsed to learn advanced techniques on unfamiliar more advanced software.

I'm a broke college student with nothing to do this summer let me  I did it once when I was 13 for the Ace Attorney movie. I bet I could figure it out again.
