In my opinion, if you're starting completely from scratch, the best software for learning how to make 3D models is TinkcerCAD. It's cloud-based and totally free. It's very simple, so you won't be making any kinds of elaborate sculptures, but it's very straightforward, and there are some great tutorials that go along with it. Once you've got a handle on that, there are some good pieces of commercial software you can move on to.

Also, if you don't have any experience with 3D printing, I'd see if you can use a community one for a bit before you buy one. A lot of libraries, universities, and community maker-spaces will have 3D printers you can use for minimal cost, and that way you'll probably be able to make a more informed personal decision if you do end up buying one.

I don't live near any universities or maker-spaces. And my local library doesn't seem to have a 3D printer. Granted I haven't been there in roughly five years but they barely have enough staff to stay open at least six full days a week.

The money you spend on a 3D printer would be at least 1/3 what you need to move.

But on the flip side, how much time and proficiency would it take to break even if I use it to make and sell homemade items?

Given how many people are already in that space, probably quite a lot, unless you’re ok with $3/hr or so after expenses.

Given how long it's taken you to figure out moving even a few hundred miles, it would not happen. You need an actual business plan, with knowledge of costs per unit and the ability to maintain a storefront online. Just go move to an area where you can make some actual money, then try NYC after.

But that would require a realistic assessment of the state of one's life, one's abilities, and one's prospects. It's much easier to just keep pining for a dream one has no intention of ever actually trying to achieve.

I'm not against this in theory, as it shows someone with ambition. However, REPO mentioned writing, then arts and crafts (painting glassware I think?), then starting a youtube channel which includes buying a mic, and now this. Jack of all trades people like this are super rare, and they all have experience in the fields in the first place. You seem to be jumping into the next avenue without giving the previous one a chance. I'd recommend going back to the previous ones and giving them a chance for a while before going into 3D printing.

I for one expect him to simply 3D print New York and live there.

Honestly, the most mystifying thing about the whole REPO Man discourse is why anyone would want to live in a large American city, let alone NYC.
