To be fair, "learn to code bro" is the biggest meme ever lol and I imagine it's not the best advice now when tons of people are listening to it, thus making it a tough career to break into with all the competition.

It's to a point that, aside from OnlyFans and/or a Faustian pact, I'm considering starting a GoFundMe. Sure, I can probably try writing a book and self publishing it, but there's no guarantee I'll get the kind of cash I need.
As far as moving to a different town and slowly moving towards NYC, that'll take too long. I'll be lucky if that way gets me to NYC before I'm 50!

The demand is still very much there. My sister just finished her career transition; she did her undergrad in business, was an office admin for several years at a law firm, went back to school to a coding academy and now works as an SRE at my company.PretentiousHipster wrote:To be fair, "learn to code bro" is the biggest meme ever lol and I imagine it's not the best advice now when tons of people are listening to it, thus making it a tough career to break into with all the competition.

Dude, to execute a plan you need to break it down into small, achievable steps. You came up with a grand plan for your future and made step one: "Move to New York City" well over a decade ago. You were asking for advice about this in 2011 with plans to move between Christmas and New Year's Eve.REPO Man wrote: As far as moving to a different town and slowly moving towards NYC, that'll take too long. If you haven't achieved step one of your plan in over ten years, maybe it's too big a step and you need to break it down into something that you can achieve.
You can move somewhere without putting down roots. I've lived lots of places for three months or less at a time. If you don't sign a long-term lease then it's easy to move.
You need to move somewhere that you can get stable employment and save some money. Moving from your tourist town to a place where you can reliably work 40-60 hours a week is not a lateral move. It's a forward move.
Alternatively, you say that in New York you could set up an Etsy shop or whatever. I don't expect Etsy to be particularly lucrative, but there is not really much that will make your crafting activities much easier in New York than where you are now, except for ill-defined thoughts about "future inspiration" or something.

Unfortunately coding is not for me. I'm not the type that can look at the big picture. Sure, I can make classes and stuff (never figured out pointers though), but how to make the code efficient was impossible.
Which does remind me. I think I have to leave my job, at least the server part. My mental health is getting worse from the previous post and work is making in impossible to manage. Shame because it looks like I can only do "easy" jobs, or at least more artistic since I can do my youtube hobby for hours a day.

I wonder if there's any work you can do from home. A lot of it is pretty menial, like medical transcription, but if you keep honing your video and audio editing skills maybe some Podcast or video series would pull you on as an editor.PretentiousHipster wrote:Which does remind me. I've made enough money to support myself on since I was 13 years old (though I was obviously still living with my parents then)- I just find it very hard to believe that you are incapable of making enough money to move.

Back in accounting I've been told my data entry skills are out of this world. I didn't wanna do it before because with short-term contracts it would be hard to keep a consistent income, but with disability it might still be ok. I'll look into it.marurun wrote:I wonder if there's any work you can do from home. I'm working three jobs right now that are a little bit closer to just being gigs. I'm still working 40ish hrs and going to school - I have to say I much prefer working like this. Maybe try to do the same with the accounting stuff.
Unrelated but had to go get an IV today- super dehydrated from the flu. Haven't been able to keep anything down for 24hrs.
