Magic Knight Rayearth, Sega Saturn. Found it in a bargain bin. Not sure why I bought it. Played it for 5 minutes. Thought, "This is lame, why am I playing this." Kept playing and finished it. It's in my top 5 games for the system. Just a simple, casual, fun game with good production values. No shame in that. I think it was my first experience with Japanese animation, too.

PretentiousHipster : Nightmare Ned
I'd never heard of this game or the show it's based on, so I looked it up and almost immediately found a screenshot that looks like an adorable little cartoon kid getting his brain punched out of the back of his head. I'm gonna need to find a way to play this...
You can see my video here if you want: https://youtu.be/WVZ0KcaOxFo
It is abandonware, so you could get it on ebay. I have another way if you wanna play it (the same way I did). If you want it just PM me.

Great game.
Super Famicom Rayearth was the first "anime RPG" I ever experienced. Fan translated in 1999!

marurun wrote:Unsung (in the US) = Grandia. Yes, the US Playstation release was flawed (in several ways, but more than anything else the English voice work), and yes, the Gung Ho PC/Switch release as Grandia HD has some of those flaws still included (but thankfully English text and Japanese voices are an option). But Grandia is one of those fantastic tales that combines adventure with the protagonists growing up and coming of age. No, the story doesn't REALLY do anything horribly unique, but the way it tells that tale is just so unabashedly enthusiastic and committed to the characters. And the combats are awesome, if not especially challenging outside of boss battles (unless you've been dodging battles and get back-attacked while under-leveled, then you might be screwed). I know I'm the only one here who appreciates this game to this degree, but I know some of you would love it if you're able to give it a chance.
Have you seen this??

And I first played that translation in 2000, when I went through and beat the game. Shame the Super Famicom release never got brought over here. It's a great game in its own right.
But then there are a lot of those. I'm looking at you, Bahamut Lagoon.

I have not played Robo Pit. Please, enlighten me.
It's basically Dollar Store Virtual-On. You craft a robot, pick it's legs, torso, arms and *face* (!) and give it a name, then you beat each other up. It has local split screen, you can battle in first-person or third-person, it's really simple to get into, and the characters and music has a certain charm to it. I also love how it takes FOREVER at the end of the match for the announcer to say "You............... win!"

Nice! This reminds me a lot of the type of janky PlayStation fighting games my brother and I would play when we were growing up.
It looks like there was actually a sequel released as well...

Yeah, the sequel was PS1 only so I never got to play it. I imagine it's the exact same game

Maybe the next time I visit my brother I'll pick up a copy so we can get all nostalgic

Question for everyone: Does getting a negative reaction to the weirdo games you're recommending lead you to second guess yourself, or like most cults, does it lead you to conclude that people just don't get it, man! I definitely fall into the latter camp

Re: Game evangelism: Unsung, weird, or bad games you promote
No, it just means the rest of you are not worthy of WeaponLord and 7th Saga.
