What was the last movie you've seen?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Watched Maniac Cop 3 last night. Continuing the shift to action over horror, but now with shoehorned-in supernatural and thriller elements, it's just a mess overall. The series started decently but ended with a whimper peppered with bangs.

New write-up of the week:
Hostile Takeover

It's so hard to find Thanksgiving themed horror movies. The Christmas ones are surprisingly a dime a dozen (and I'll get to some of those next month), but other holidays not so much. And this one isn't even really a horror movie either. It's labled as such, but it's more of a thriller than it is anything else. But it's also so chill that it's almost a character study of four very troubled individuals. It's one of the strangest, but also one of the most interesting hostage films I've seen, where the bad guy feels more like the good guy and the good guys come across as assholes. It's not perfect, of course. It's the kind of film that thinks it's a hell of a lot more deep than it really is, but there are some interesting ideas here and it's certainly unique in its approach.
Oh, and it has one of the most stupidly awesome escape sequences I think I've ever seen. Seriously, it's bizarrely amazing, and I made a gif of it so that everyone can see it.

Michi, your reviews are always great, and that is one amazing gif. Where do you find movies like this?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Ah, thank you
In this case, I didn't want to do a write-up of the other "Thankskilling" film, so instead I did a search for other non-family-oriented Thanksgiving themed films, and this popped up on a couple of lists....and as mentioned, those list were either (a) kinda short, and/or (b) the movies listed were not readily available to me on streaming services.
Unfortunately the film only barely qualifies for what I was looking. But hey, it was amusing and I tried.
Thankfully I'll have a veritable cornucopia of choices to choose from for Christmas

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Nice! I’m looking forward to it.
......
Last night, my wife and I watched Kiss Me, Stupid (1964). It’s a Billy Wilder comedy starring Dean Martin, Kim Novak, and Ray Walston (a/k/a My Favorite Martian). At the time of its release, it was considered vulgar, was panned by critics for being vulgar, and the Catholic Legion of Decency objected strongly to its release. This means that it was way ahead of its time, and is actually incredibly funny. It’s almost like a modern R-rated comedy, but made in the 1960s, starring classic Hollywood icons, and directed by Billy Wilder (or, put another way, the best of everything). It is really, really funny, and we both enjoyed it quite a bit. Also, it’s available for streaming on Prime Video; so, you should be able to watch it for free if you have the service.
The only thing dragging it down a bit was the casting. Kim Novak and Ray Walston are great, but their roles were written for Marilyn Monroe And Jack Lemmon, respectively. Had either of them been in the production, the movie would not have been just “very good;” it would have been amazing. Dean Martin, cast as “Dino”, is perfect, though. It’s an early example of a celebrity roasting himself and his reputation for drinking and womanizing.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
It's officially December! Which means it's time to start watching some films filled with yuletide horror and mayhem! So the first write-up this month is:
Night Train Murders

Two girls, who are trying to avoid a couple of creepers and have clearly never seen a horror movie before, switch from their crowded train to a deserted one. And, as they are want to do, the creepers follow them, bringing along a new friend that may be even more dangerous then they are.
This is a film is obviously based on Last House on the Left, but with a blessing tendency too flinch during the... er, grittier moments. So it's not quite as bad, content-wise, as Last House, but it's still pretty uncomfortable. It does benefit from some arty moments and a decent budget. Unfortunately it's also stymied by slow pacing, a meh script, some regrettable dubbing and one of the worst sounding opening songs I think I've ever heard. Not sure why they decided to have the film take place during Christmas, but I guess for those looking for films following the incredibly narrow niche criteria of "holiday themed Last House clones" than this be your jam.

My wife and I note this all the time when we watch horror movies. (So many lives could be saved if more horror movie protagonists had just watched more horror films!) We usually note the point in each movie where the protagonist should know he or she is in a horror film. (“Uh-oh! You’d better put down that puzzle box!”) We feel bad for anyone killed before that point in the movie, but after that...eh. They should have known better!

To be fair to the girls though, their initial logic was sound: they recognized the danger the creepers posed and tried to remove themselves from that situation. Unfortunately that's where the good sense ended. They went from a crowded train, to a new one with a completely empty cab at the end of the train, AKA: dark and deserted no man's land, without telling either of their parents. It was a predictable recipe for disaster....or it would have been, had they ever bothered to watch a horror movie before
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
But that didn't help the guy in Scream 2.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Michi wrote:Two girls, who . . . have clearly never seen a horror movie before . . . .![]()

After taking some time away, I figured I should sit back and hit up the old movie blog again. So I did.
the Park is Mine

Tommy Lee Jones plays an out of work Vietnam veteran whose wife has left him and whose best friend just committed suicide, but not before sending Jones a letter detailing his plans to hijack all of Central Park "for the little guy." So of course TLJ finds the gear and decides to go through with the plan, all to celebrate Veterans Day in America.
The movie is very much a First Blood wannabe with a veteran taking his war skills up against the police and local government, and it's a made for TV movie with a low budget but featuring a surprisingly great cast. Also, it was HBO's first foray into the made-for-TV market, so it has some interesting chops. Watch if you want to see ridiculous '80s NYPD SWAT riding Canadian helicopters and scummy city politicians take on a guy who becomes a local hero to the people of New York...as it should be.
And yes, I am ripping off Michi's style for this forum post.
