It wasn't just shovelware games, just any game under a certain price ($10 IIRC). Which means, yeah, it could be a sports or shovelware game (not that this makes it OK) but it could also be a AAA game. For example I got a disc only copy of Metal Gear Solid 2 in GameStop's disc-only bin, and quite a few others. Normally I don't purchase disc only games, but I felt like I was rescuing them!

No, but GameStop doesn't think so. Trade-in value and sale price was always a flat price no matter what was included or not. Collectors care, but again, most gamers probably don't. If a collector walks into a GameStop for a certain game and the only copy is disc-only (they would put it in a generic case) they wouldn't buy it, but the average gamer might buy it.

GameStop will open up new games so they can put the case on the shelf for display purposes (and keep the disc behind the counter so no one could steal the game) but when they run out of sealed copies they sell this opened copy as NEW and for the same price. So the factory wrap was removed. The case was on the shelf, who knows how many people handled it. And the disc was handled at LEAST twice, once to take it out and once to put it back. And you're telling me that I should pay the same price as a sealed copy? If they took $5 off for this that would make all the difference in my opinion. But I think it's outrageous to sell anything that's "open box" for the same price as factory sealed. But I guess most people don't care and bought copies like that, and that just tells GameStop that it's OK to do it.

For a while Gamestop didn't even put things like download codes or the Club Nintendo point vouchers with the disc behind the counter. If they were the only store that had whatever game you were looking for then the chances were good that the DLC was already stolen if the "new" copy was your only option.

Speaking of shovelware, have we seen the end of it? Last I heard of it was on the Wii. I always wondered who bought that stuff, my only guess its children who are attracted to the cover art(I did when I was younger, still sucker for graphics though).
PS4 and Switch and Steam are loaded with Shovelware on their digital stores. Not so much with physical games. Some but not a whole lot. Oddly Sony advertizes shovelware on its official YouTube channel.

Hot Take...Some shovelware is pretty great, and the presence of it in a console’s library is a testament to the console’s strength.

btw, by shovelware I mean those weak attempts to make a game like those exercise games and movie/show bad adaptation. You know what I am talking about, if it has another definition I do not know it.

Yeah I do not navigate the digital stores much there is a lot of content. I read Steam is pretty terrible but on my PS3 PSN and Steam I only see triple A games and popular indie ones featured and recommended. If you are looking for the terrible stuff you have to search for it specifically.

I see your point, but that is not always the case. For example it didn't work for 3DO and Pippin. What shovelware games are great? And I mean not because of their "B-movie" effect

I hate when you go into something expecting to like it, then don’t, and then slip into an even more depressed mood because you feel like you should like it.

I will find a JRPG this year that keeps my attention long enough to finish it.

I just can't get into Resident Evil. Everything I've ever heard about the game sounds awesome. And all the video footage looks amazing. But every time I try to play it, I don't know, I just can't get into it. But I really wish I could!

I don't know that the 3DO and Pippin had a lot of shovelware. Shovelware doesn't mean bad. Shovelware just means cheap and dirty to produce, because a studio can just shovel it out. They are games with overly basic or simple mechanics (usually knock-offs of other, better [or sometimes not]) titles, cheap art assets or even outright asset flips, and stock music. Sometimes shovelware hits a neat balance that just works, and studios that pump out shovelware typically won't bother with a platform that doesn't have a critical mass of users, because their hit rate is pretty low, so they need as many eyeballs and potential customers as possible.

So yes, most shovelware is arguably bad, but not all bad, or even cheap, software is shovelware. Shovelware is a very specific kind of bad.

I don't like it either, nor am I a fan of any derivative games. It's slow, clunky, and tedious. It's okay to not like stuff. We can't all agree on everything.

Same(ish) - I'm not super keen on survival horror in the first place, but they do fall into games that I tend to find difficult to play. Whether tank controls on early ones, or narrow FoV on RE4 (only one of the later ones I've tried). Kinda just gave me a headache to try and play, and I think it comes down a bit to the tight over-the-shoulder viewpoint. Could not stand trying to play Dead Space either.
