I recently stumbled across some Space Harrier videos and I must say it looks a really fun game however given the amount of ports I'm having a bad time choosing the best Space Harriers.
If I'm not wrong the SMS Ports (Normal and 3D), the Saturn Port and the Genesis port are all dumbed down versions of the original. Is this true? Because I can play the original via MAME.
Also there's a remake for the PS2 called Space Harrier 3D if I'm not mistaken. How is it? It looks kinda cool.
What about Space Harrier 2 for the Genesis?

I loved this game when I was a kid, I remeber being blown away by the arcade cab with the moving chair that you used to control the game.
I have the saturn version and its pretty good, and offers analog control. According to Wikipedia the Space Harrier Complete Collection for PS2 was the most arcade true port you will find, but its jap only so originals are gonna be rare so you may as well play it on mame.

If you have it in mame, why bother with inferior console ports? Seems kinda silly to me.
Re: Space Harrier?
Not sure how the Sega Saturn version could possibly be "dumbed down", it's looks and sounds near enough perfect to me. There's also a 32X port much like the Saturn one, but the Saturn one is the cheapest good one you can get (on the Sega Ages disc with After Burner and Outrun).

its also in the very expensive yu suzuki's gameworks as well as hidden in shenmue.
They say the 32x one is near arcade perfect.

Re: Space Harrier?
All right so I'm trying it in MAME and if I like it I may get the PS2 version if I found the original too hard. Space Harrier II for the Genesis looks cool but I don't think the game would be as fun with digital controls.
The bad news: I need a Joystick because the game is unplayable with digital controls as it reduces your movement to 9 points on the screen. The good news is that joysticks are awfully cheap.

Re: Space Harrier?
This is probably true for Space Harrier in particular, but there are some games which are improved in consoles - if they can port the game accurately and offer something else for example (extra modes, better music, stuff like that).t0yrobo wrote:If you have it in mame, why bother with inferior console ports? I'm partial to the Shenmue 1 version myself. The analog pad is a decent substitute for the stick the arcade rev used plus you get a prize if you beat the high score in the arcade.
