I think it's nostalgia. A lot of those games were ones I was enamored with at the time despite not having a PS2.

I really miss seeing game looking like this. Pillars not the same and it didn't scratch my itch.

I really liked the pre-rendered isometric look as well. The less dark version of it lent itself really nicely to management sims and had a charm that modern fully 3D ones just don't have for me.
