It’s really about different views of leaning and challenge. If you have a checkpoint way back and can mostly handle things until a bad jump or section, it’s hard to learn that section if you have to spend a ton of time doing stuff you already know how to do. The real problem is that there are so many of those really tight timing challenges that they have to put in a billion short checkpoints to keep you from punching your screen. I don’t think modern indie games appreciate giving players breathers and areas to just play with their abilities.

I'm thinking of snapping it up along with that Capcom Brawler package that has FF, D&D and others in it.
There's a UK based online retailer here in the UK I use that stocks a lot of import stuff at great prices (365games for anyone here that hasn't realised they have a small import section). I'm so glad I found the site, because now I can usually buy or pre-order a lot of American and Asian/Japanese games at great prices, without import fees and without having to wait weeks for the game to arrive. I bought Okami HD yesterday, used a £5 off voucher and then chipped in an extra 99p for next day shipping, so it should be coming this morning :D Edit: Or not. Royal Mail (or 365games) let me down :(

It's much more convenient than using Play-Asia, possibly paying customs and taxes and waiting weeks for the game to arrive. I still have to use it for some games though, I'll check out that yes-asia site too.

At least in the case of Celeste, I'm not sure many modern indie games are that interested in replicating that retro feeling. For games like that and VVVVVV, I really like just being able to immediately retry a really tough jump, because the whole point of the game is getting through those tough platforming challenges. Celeste isn't as nice a flow as Shovel Knight in regards to feeling like a swift, retro action platformer because it isn't trying to be. I love Shovel Knight, don't get me wrong, but I love games like VVVVVV and Celeste as well, just for different reasons.

So many of these indie games (obviously) ape the visual styles of retro games. But it also seems like the developers are purposefully trying to avoid the "Nintendo hard" elements prevalent in so many retro classics. Instead they overcorrect with this frequent death / frequent checkpoint garbage, which is actually much much worse.

How does it make them worse? Worse in regards of replicating the feel of the older games whose graphical style they mimic?

"Worse" as in "it's my personal opinion that they're worse."

But yeah, I'd love some more indie games with, say, a Contra style of difficulty.

Fair difficulty, not cheap just to rack up kills and restart in the same place. Makes sense to me. A lifetime of Ghosts n Goblins and Contra would be far better than most of the fake hard done cheap done now sadly.

By the way if someone missed it, webprice is matched in store, Walmart $29.80 - Dark Souls Remastered SWITCH. :)
