Also anther problem I have is with my Genesis model 2. I get these white vertical lines across the screen, which makes it suck to play games.

This is actually the fault of the cheap video encoders that Sega used on the Model 2 Genesis systems, get a Model 1 or the later 3/4 motherboard Model 2 and those lines will disappear along with a noticeable jump in sound quality.

How can you tell when one is a 3/4 motherboard Model 2?

RIP my SNES with the exact same problem

Tried replacing cables, changing games, seems it's the system at fault, despite working fine a few weeks back. It had worked fine ever since I bought it.

As a side note, replacement consoles are so expensive these days. I used to be able to pick up replacements of most retro consoles for a fiver. Now people are like "hey, here's a yellow-and-smashed-to-fuck broken console for spares and repairs. £25 please." Might have to dig deep for a nice replacement model...

If it's no sound that is the issue, it wouldn't surprise me if a capacitor has gone bad in the audio circuit. Don't toss it, at any rate. There are folks that can likely get it working again.

Yeah man, I did a bit of research online and that seems to be the most likely issue. I never chuck any of my broken consoles, in case they ever come in handy for spare part or in case someone can fix them or whatever. So I'll keep it around. It probably is an easy fix for some people.

I have bought a replacement console on Ebay anyways. I checked my local games store's stock online too and they actually had a SNES in stock, so I was tempted to head straight out and pick it up, but they only had one that is their lowest condition grade and it was quite pricey. Hopefully the one I got off Ebay is in decent condition and is packaged well.

Cool. Don't blame you for just snagging a replacement. I've got a few that need some recapping as well, and I haven't done it yet. That's why I have spares.

Yeah, if sound was the only issue, I wonder if replacing the SHVC Sound board with one from another system would work. It's basically plug and play (once you get it open to that part) and would confirm if a cap replacement would help.

Really find this interesting.

The problems I've run into are PPU's/graphics processors that are going bad. I hope it is a rare condition. Not much you can do with those except part it out (which I have done for a couple of my other systems).

Won an auction for another SNES as a back up on Ebay. It was being sold by a charity store's Ebay shop and hasn't been tested, so it really didn't cost me much. If it works, then it'll be a great score! If it doesn't work, then whatever, at least it only cost £8 and the money will go to charity.
