I made more Metroid progress! Defeated Kraid, got more missiles, more energy tanks, the wave beam... and ended up dying in the same inescapable pit I fell into last time. T__T
On the other side of the pit? One measly missile-upgrade. I'm confident that I'll be fine without it and next session I'll head straight to Ridley's area. The end is in sight!
laurenhiya21 wrote:So I played some Metroid and it's difficult! You guys make it sound super easy, but so far I haven't really made any progress. I mean I got the first powerup (which doesn't say much since it's right there), but after that I will go a little ways one way and die. Go a ways a different way and die. Lots of dying.

I'll give it another shot though I think, but does anyone have any pointers?
First, be aware that you start with 30 life BUT you start with a MAXIMUM of 99, so you can farm health right away! There are some areas in which infinitely-spawning enemies come up out of tubes and then fly at you, that's a good place to gather health at this stage. One of the game's problems is how long it takes to farm health. The only items that take your health all the way to the maximum are energy tanks (which also permanently boost your max health) and they're few and far between.

I also definitely recommend using maps! I'm partial to this one on GameFAQs.
The game definitely is more obtuse than it should be. Sometimes even WITH the map, there are some tricky bits that aren't obvious. I know *I* feel zero shame in looking at a walkthrough for this game.

For a casual playthrough, you only need a handful of missile expansions. The rest of your stock will come from beating Ridley and Kraid. For energy management, I recommend you save the energy tank at the very start of the game (that you need ice to get to) until the end, when you're ready to go to Tourian. Ridley is far far easier to beat than Kraid; I'd recommend you do Ridley first.

My pleasure. With video games...even when they’re bad, they’re still a little bit good.

I would rather play a bad video game than mow a good lawn.

I dunno, I've played some bad video games...

I the battle between Pit Fighter on SNES or mowing the lawn, I think I might go for mowing the lawn. And I suffer from hayfever.

That said, I could always get the best of both worlds and play this:

That's 'Advanced Lawnmower Simulator' for ZX Spectrum. I'm unclear if the main character is a lady or not though, so I guess we should get back on topic

I would much rather mow my lawn than ever play Glass Rose again.

Well ... I took my shot at Athena. After looking at some screenshot comparisons I decided that I liked the aesthetics of the arcade release a bit moreso than the NES release. It really is a beautiful looking game for the time of release. But wow ... this game was really designed to unceremoniously eat your quarters with no remorse or pity. The number of enemies on screen at any given time is full-on bonkers. Coupled with the fact that the controls feel a bit clumsy at times, it was not a great time.

So I fired up the NES version to see if it was any more forgiving. And in some ways it is. The enemy count is more reasonable than the arcade release (although it does have the aggressive respawning typical of many NES games from this time period), but ... the controls feel even worse in this one. And that sucks, because in some ways I feel like this game would have a lot of potential if only the controls were tightened up a bit.

It's a game that I want to like. And it comes so close ... but yeah I think I'll give The Guardian Legend a try. I'll probably play Athena again at some point to see if I can get better acclimated with it. If anything it was nice to play the arcade original and the NES port back to back. When and if I do go back I'll definitely opt for the arcade release which I feel like is the definitive version.

I would much rather perform drive-bys on a riding lawnmower in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas than use an actual lawnmower.
