The Switch has taken 10 months to surpass lifetime Wii U sales: http://variety.com/2018/digital/news/ni ... 202682831/

In other weird Wii U news...Konami released two more TG-16 games for the console today: Mr. Heli and Necromancer. The latter is a JRPG never released outside Japan until today. Unfortunately, the product page has this disclaimer:

“This is a Japanese import title. Import games may contain foreign language or other references that are unknown to consumers. This RPG is Japanese only and requires proficiency in the Japanese language to play.”

I was just mentioning this in the slack chat. In 2018, Konami decided to release a Japanese language JRPG untranslated onto the Wii U virtual console in Europe and America.

Never let it be said that Konami make questionable business decisions...

It probably cost about a thousand times more to get this rated than it would make in revenue from the maybe 3 people who will buy it.

I kinda knew this would happen. Not this soon though. Only about 13 or so million units out there. Nintendo's online store and eBay store is fresh out of the refurbished units. I wanted to get a spare one eventually but it looks like I missed out.

Oh, that makes me glad I got one. This past September I picked up a refurbished unit from Nintendo to hold as a backup, but I was kinda regretting spending the money on it. Now I feel a little better knowing that a replacement might be hard to find or expensive 10 or 20 years from now.

What I really gotta remember to do is hook up the spare and grab all the updates before Nintendo shuts down Wii U online services.

I'm not too concerned about getting a backup, as Nintendo tends to support repairs for a long time on their systems. If for whatever reason it all breaks down and I can't replace.... I'll just buy the games on switch muahahahaha

I wonder what the demand and prices will be like for Wii U hardware and games on the retro market in 10 years time. Due to its reasonably short lifespan and failure, will it gather any kind of cult following? I feel like the huge number of ports to the Switch etc will possibly be detrimental to this, but then perhaps the small number of exclusives may make it desirable to certain collectors. Games like Wonderful 101 and Tokyo Mirage Sessions are certainly going to be really popular with certain audiences. Are there many games on the Wii U that received really low print runs and are exclusive (or at least have features/modes exclusive to the Wii U).

Usually, if a console fails or doesn't have huge success, then a lot of games have really low print runs, particularly those released in the final quarter of the console's lifespan, but that doesn't seem to have happened with the Wii U? It seems like there's millions of Breath of the Wilds out there for example, whilst Twilight Princess on the Gamecube didn't have many copies. You can still find new copies of the remastered version of Darksiders for 10 or 15 GBPs. I'm sure there's plenty of Paper Marios out there too, which came out a few months before the Switch was released.

I think the Wii U will end up being a lot like the Dreamcast down the line; the average gamer won't care because most games have cheaper and/or better versions on other consoles, but the few true exclusives will keep a cult following alive not to mention the whole "everyone loves an underdog" thing. I mean, that's basically most of the reason I love my 5200 and Jaguar. :P

I took a look at the games that I own for the system and I see a few staying on the platform:

The New Super Mario U games. Nintendo would just make a new one to be honest.

Super Mario 3D World / Toads Treasure Tracker. The Switch has Odyssey so this may be a redundant release.

Super Smash Bros for Wii U. Nintendo would make another one but all four games in the series were different in the sense of different characters, stages, and physics.

Xenoblade Chronicles X. You have XC2 so it may be pointless to release this after.

Paper Mario: Color Splash / Star Fox Zero / Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. I think the heavy reliance with using the game pad would be difficult to port over and retain the vision they were going for.

And that's all I've got.

Those are the exact games I would anticipate staying exclusive. I would add Wonderful 101 which wasn’t developed by Nintendo of course but i don’t imagine it will be ported.
