Games that haven't aged well.
What are some games that were great for their time, or that you loved as a kid, but have aged poorly?
Re: Games that haven't aged well.
This is probably best split up into two categories. Graphics that have aged poorly, and gameplay that has aged poorly.

I disagree. There are many ways a game can age poorly, but the core factor is that it ultimately did. The implication of aging poorly is that it’s just not a great experience now and it was then.Ziggy587 wrote:This is probably best split up into two categories. Most Atari games.
For something a bit more modern. Banjo Kazooie. Just feels like an era of game design we gladly moved away from and I liked Banjo back then.

Altered Beast
I'm under the impression that both the arcade and Genesis port of this game really impressed a lot of folks back in the 80s with it's large sprites, digitized voices, and detailed graphics. But the gameplay is trash. I don't think anyone really likes this game nowadays unless they're filled with nostalgia for it.

Altered Beast is certainly very simple, but I don't think it's trash. I actually think it's pretty fun for what it is. But then again, I also tend to play a lot of NES games, and that system is filled with rather simple, arcade-like experiences with some major quirks, too. So maybe that's it.
I think that DOOM and DOOM 2 haven't aged all that well. I only got around to giving them a fair shot, and they're spectacular games, but they seem downright quaint graphically compared to the sorts of visceral stuff in gaming now.
Now, Wolfenstein 3D hasn't really aged terribly well in either category. DOOM just completely outclasses it. It was important, and my kid brain was amazed at what I was seeing (I got to see it on a Tandy at Radio Shack), but... eh.

Re: Games that haven't aged well.
I think it's a bit hard to define what hasn't aged well. For example, on one hand Commodere 64 games with their awful controls and hit detection could be a good example. On the other, since they always had poor controls compared to Japanese games, perhaps not.
Most people agree that Goldeneye and Perfect Dark have aged very poorly. Many people who loved this game can no longer enjoy it because of the controls.
Dance Dance Revolution games with a 30fps rate instead of 60fps are kind of painful.
Dune II is a pain because you can only select one unit at a time. The number of units is los so it isn't too bad, though.

There's an updated version someone released of it for Android (not sure if PC too) and it fixes that little problem. It puts the game on the same level of C&C with friendly behavior when building/moving/managing stuff and units on the whole.Erik_Twice wrote: Dune II is a pain because you can only select one unit at a time. I take the question as "Is it still worth playing?" To this point, the two categories are required. There are many games that are still fun to play, but look terrible by today's standards. They are worth playing even if the graphics will make your eyes bleed. However, the opposite isn't really true. Poorly aged gameplay may not be worth playing, even with graphics that aged well.marurun wrote:I disagree. There are many ways a game can age poorly, but the core factor is that it ultimately did. For me it's a large portion of the 5th console generation in general, at least games that require you to move in a 3D space. Outside of PC games, nostalgia of early 3D isn't a factor to me until the Dreamcast so I have a difficult time going back to any 3D game with free movement but no dual analog control.
