It's how Doom has stayed alive for me personally with the mod community going for 20 some years, people are still making maps and I think it's safe to say I will continue to go back and play new Doom wads for the rest of my life. If From Software wanted to keep making Souls games I would play them forever. A traditional Metroid is something I always want in my life.
I'm like this as well and was actually thinking about it a lot recently. I know I've probably said this before somewhere but a sequel is like another album from a band you like. Sometimes it'll be more of the same and you'll still love it, sometimes they'll experiment a bit and it will either work for you or it won't.

A good game is a good game and as long as a developer is willing to make sequels and the demand exists for them, then there's enough justification to keep making them. Not every game needs to be groundbreaking or set out to change its genre. Sometimes another adventure layered on top of a pre-established formula is all you need and isn't that was most games, original IP or not, are anyway?

I'm not saying sequelitis isn't a thing of course, when a developer stops giving a crap (see the diminishing quality of Mega Man X after X4) then maybe it's time to stop instead of drilling a franchise into the ground.

On the other hand if you've got something as popular as Mario you can risk trying something different to try and draw in new people once in a while. 3D Land interested me because it was different. Super Mario Odyssey isn't even on my radar because of its Mario 64 genetics. So when you've got huge franchises that have been so many different things you have this delicate balancing act of trying to please everyone who enjoyed different iterations of your franchise. Of course when you're on Mario's level it's going to sell a bajillion copies anyway because of the multi-generational general audience appeal and you can release stuff like NSMB and Mario Maker as well to keep retro fans happy so Mario maybe is a bad example. Zelda may be a better example since that fanbase can get pretty heavily fractured in regards to their preferences. For me personally I've ignored releases for years outside of Link Between Worlds. You would have to pay me to play a traditional 3D Zelda but I'd love to try BotW.

So the long and short of it is giving fans what they want is fine and changing things up occasionally is fine. Just make good games dammit.

Ya. I don't think there's a Zelda I haven't finished outside of the CDi games, and those don't count. I'd give Phantom Hourglass probably an 8/10, fun but not scaling the heights of the best. Still better than a lot of games. Spirit Tracks is probably 8.5, maaaaaaybe 9.0 but that feels like it's pushing it. Actually, I'll just roll with 8.5. I liked it a lot (clearly), but still not going on my list of best Zelda games. I think they are the weakest handheld games that can be considered mainline entries. I am tempted to revisit them with the d-pad patches, though.

Also, I know folks love Majora's Mask, but it just didn't do much for me. Even with the remade version, I think it might be a 7/10 at best.

Well bud, you and I have starkly different opinions concerning Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. But there's nothing wrong with that. I did finish both games before coming to my conclusions, for the record.

On the modern 3D Zelda/Mario thing. I recognize these are all well made polished games. It's just some of them don't interest me personally. It boils down to burn out I think. Perhaps some day I'll feel differently, and enjoy BotW/Odyssey. Just not today.

As for game series that could never change and I'd never get tired of them, I can't think of many. But I can think of at least three. Obviously King's Field. Next would be the GBA/DS-era Igavanias. Thirdly; Hotel Dusk/Last Window. I would play more games in each respective series, with no innovation beyond fresh content, and be totally content for the foreseeable future.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

That's why I'm looking forward to Bloodstained for sure. We're getting close, hopefully! Although take all the time you need, IGA. We all want it to be awesome.

I understand why a lot of folks didn't like the DS Zeldas at all. The Ocean King segments were the most annoying part, and I could have done without them for sure. Given that Spirit Tracks was literally on rails, those that like overworlds were just out of luck. I don't really care, honestly; the overworld usually doesn't appeal to me as much as it does some folks (which makes my enjoyment of Breath of the Wild rather striking). Add in that last layer of enforced touch screen controls, and even without the other flaws, they're going to end up divisive. I wanted traditional controls, too. But I did eventually cotton (or at least adjust to) the touch controls.

Chiming in on the DS Zelda titles, I really enjoyed Phantom Hourglass, but I found Spirit Tracks to be rather tedious and the definitely the one I enjoyed less.

If there's one thing my Zelda goggles won't defend... it's this THING.

Today I just remembered it was Majora's Mask that introduced him. I tend to think it's Wind Waker usually.

I judge each and every Mario and Zelda game on their own merits based on when I've played them and the order I played them.

Which is why I have my unpopular opinions that Mario Sunshine is great, and TP is actually a great Zelda, screw the naysayers. (Gotta be GCN though)

It doesn't get Skyward Sword levels of hate but I've definitely seen people complain about it.
