It's been fascinating watching friends of mine play Secret of Mana for the first time (thanks to the SNES Classic), one guy I know said, "So, uh... when does this get better?" That game has always been so near and dear to me that I never realized how much of my affection for it is like 95% nostalgia and sentimental stuff. It's a really clunky game for a variety of reasons -- the scroll point is way too close to the edge of the screen, having to pause the game to use magic, wonky hit detection, just to name a few things.Exhuminator wrote:I agree wholeheartedly. I used to love Secret of Mana, years ago. But fairly recently I went back to replay it, and I don't think it has aged well. Yes it still looks and sounds great, but it plays as you say "janky". Not only that, the pacing is all over the place, and progression isn't exactly intuitive at times. I still think Secret of Mana is a good game, but I don't think it's the apex of action-RPG perfection as some like to claim it is. There were better action-RPGs even during its time.marurun wrote:I just wish combat were better. It is a bit janky.

I had Secret of Evermore in the 90s, and didn't like it. Never beat it. Earlier this year I decided to give it another chance, after over twenty years of not playing it. And you know what? Secret of Evermore is still a shit show.SNESdrunk wrote:No chance. SoE has so many problems IMO

You guys make me cry. The game rules. It's a creepy atmospheric East-Meets-West tour de force.
Re: RPG Progress Report
I would have liked Secret of Evermore more if they weren't so stingy with that last alchemy ingredient that you need. Combining the limited casts gated by items with the SoM style growth system was a bad combination.

So much yes! When I played it for the first time a year or two ago, I was blown away by that! I guess it's to help facilitate the 3-player gameplay, but it's really not conducive to making the base game any better. I would've much preferred the camera just being centered on P1's character all the time and the other guys just having to deal with it.SNESdrunk wrote:-- the scroll point is way too close to the edge of the screen, having to pause the game to use magic, wonky hit detection, just to name a few things.

Just beat Super Mario RPG for the first time. Absolutely loved it. Has lots of flaws. It is a game that does all the little things really well, but struggles with the large scale story elements. That's okay though, still was worth experiencing and definitely a fun time! 2 SNES classic games down! So many more to go!

Evermore is fine. That Jeremy Soule SNES OST is incredible. Wish he did more on the SNES or chiptunes in general.
Nice!!! Did you do some of the extra stuff? Fight Culex?BogusMeatFactory wrote:Just beat Super Mario RPG for the first time. Absolutely loved it. Has lots of flaws. I didn't fight culex, but I did get lazy shell! That helped a bunch! I was kind of eager to finish the game. I may revisit and do the extra stuff on my save, but for now I am reveling in my victory, as easy as it may have been!Xeogred wrote:Evermore is fine. That Jeremy Soule SNES OST is incredible. I love the game's atmosphere, there's still nothing else like it. I've been waiting for someone to make a patch that addresses some of the game's issues -- I know there's a Hardtype patch out there, but hopefully one day someone will make a more comprehensive improvement patchBoneSnapDeez wrote:You guys make me cry. Best Evermore track:
Jeremy Soule did some remixes which are amazing too:
If only the story wasn't kind of terrible though, the evil twins thing... oh boy.
