RPG Progress Report
Re: RPG Progress Report
Paper Mario... I played the Wii one and never beat it. I also hear that series is very hit or miss.

The first two are fantastic RPG's. After that, as you've seen with the Wii version, they really wanted to branch out, as they wanted the Mario & Luigi games to be their flagship RPG titles and thought the PM series was taking away from that. Such is why you have the still pretty fun, but nothing like the first two Super Paper Mario on Wii, the fairly mixed (I didn't enjoy it but Sarge really did) Paper Mario Sticker Star on 3DS, and Color Splash on Wii U (which I don't think anyone on here has played/beaten, but I've heard is basically jsut Sticker Star but done far better).Xeogred wrote:Paper Mario... Yeah, I'm weird in that I enjoyed pretty much all the Paper Mario games. I've got Color Splash, but I'm not sure I like it as much as Sticker Star. It doubles down on the mechanic, sometimes to its detriment. It's definitely a game for completionists, though; every area has paint spots that need to be filled in, and the game tracks your percentage.
Anyway, I'm knee-deep in Ys VIII, and I'm happy to report that it's a lot better than those opening bits. It starts very slow, but you fall into a groove rather quickly, and the cycle of explore/loot/craft/repeat is surprisingly addictive. I was worried that it would be more like Celceta, but doubling down on those elements actually helps the game, since now it doesn't feel tacked on, it feels integral to the experience. I definitely think I'll be finishing this one off; pretty sure I've put in 5-6 hours today.

I'm in the final stretch of BoF: Dragon Quarter. The game is apparently not going to let me hard save until I'm at the final boss, but I'm not going back to the last telecorder. I will persevere on soft saves. That's what this game is about. I have all the tools to stay alive, I just need to use them effectively. (I had completely forgotten about this dearth of telecorders in the latter part of the game, though.)
I'm also, sort of, trying to tailor my actions to the motivations of the characters: There is no turning back, there is only forward. Forward through the oligarchical abyss of the "Members."
I have a whole metric buttload of d-counter left, too. I could potentially d-dash through to the end of the game, actually.

Re: RPG Progress Report
So I beat Golf Story and have focused the entirety of my attention go Super Mario RPG. I just got my fifth star and have just 2 left! I have, I would assume, the entire cast of characters in my party. I am loving just how useful everyone is in this game. At the moments were I begin to feel that Geno or Mallow are useless, they are the source of great help in making things so much easier.
Geno and his buffs make boss fights a breeze and Mallow's lightning attacks have made certain fights in the 5th star dungeon such a breeze!
I am also surprised as to how... subconscious the rhythm attacks have become. When on the offense, they are second nature and on defense it really depends on the enemies, but those ones in particular aren't that important.
I learned a trick early in the game to make levelling easy when the opportunity arises. In the very beginning when Mario and Mallow are chasing that crocodile thief guy, I had been killed by him and it returned me to my last save point with no penalty and all the enemies and such were back. The big thing was... so was the star that was just a screen over from that save point. When I got to the star 5 dungeon I had an opportunity to use that to my advantage and got Mario and team up a whopping 5 levels before I decided to move on, making that dungeon and boss fight super easy.
This game is so good!!!!

I've started playing SWEET HOME, the NES survival-horror-action-RPG. Many many years ago, I got a good ways into Sweet Home, but stopped playing, and I don't remember why. Hopefully this time I'll beat it.

Re: RPG Progress Report
That game owns. It is kinda tricky though.
Re: RPG Progress Report
I could go to the final battle now in Dragon's Dogma but knowing me I like to putter around, explore, do quests long long long long before I ever progress the story in an RPG. This game has some flaws but overall a damn good game. Sometimes Japanese devs get western better than western studios. Esp in action ARPG combat. I really don;t know what is wrong with western studios but they suck at action combat most the time. Yes, I can name action RPG games made in the west with good combat but sadly that is a rarity. Soulsborne series also get western more than most western studios just overall not just talking combat. The lore, world, setting the art, everything. Dragon's Dogma isn't going for high fantasy with elaborate locals but aiming for something a little more authentic. Normally I love a more imaginative fantasy setting with very elaborate castles and locals but I think this game pulls it off well. The story is oddly paced and done, where sometimes you are not sure you are doing a story quest. I have read 98% of this game's story is nonexistent and so far that's true. I've also read the last 2% is mindblowing so here is hoping. The dungeons are great esp the optional one. Even the box art shows a boss, not in the main quest. The game is great but has odd choices.

You probably ran out of the limited healing items? That is pretty much all I can think up that would stop you from beating it.Exhuminator wrote:This is the most I've ever agreed with you on anything. Super Mario RPG is fantastic.BogusMeatFactory wrote:This game is so good!!!!

Playing Secret of Mana. Need to go into the forest and then Gaia’s Navel. I just wish combat were better. It is a bit janky.
