This is exactly what I expected from Tropical Freeze, and why I have no desire to play it. I did not enjoy Returns much at all.

That is exactly how I feel about the controls in the games. They're just not very responsive. And to be clear, I don't particularly like the controls in the NSMB games, either. Too much momentum. I'd still like to get a physical copy of the game one of these days, but it hasn't exactly been a priority.

As is also true for its predecessor, the controls in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze suck balls. Jumps are low and sluggish, it's hard to gain momentum, there's a dedicated "grab" button for vines and whatnot (wtf), button placement is weird, and so on. I appreciate the multiple configurations offered, but they all are terrible. One even brings back the waggle. Kill me.

The original SNES game flows like water down a gentle stream. This is just an exercise in frustration.

All I can say about this is... it just doesn't click with you. I do not enjoy the Donkey Kong Country games at all, but found Tropical Freeze to be masterful. The gripes you had with 2 I agree with wholeheartedly, but I do not agree with your assessment of tropical freeze. That is okay though, because I totally get playing a game and for whatever reasons, it just doesn't click and it seems like this is a case of that.

I gotta say I don't understand either. It just doesn't click. I think both DKCR games are some of the best 2D platformers released this decade. They control great, the level design is great, and the music and graphics are both beautiful. Tropical Freeze got rid of the waggle mechanic from the first one, which was my main problem with that game (as so often you'd barrel yourself off a cliff because you were trying to duck to blow away a thingy). It's not enough of the old games for you, and I get that. Just a shame y'all can't enjoy them as much as I do :(

After all the hype aaaaannnndddd...........

Ys VIII is the worst game in the series by a wide margin. And I include Ys Strategy and the botched Famicom port of Ys I when I say this. An absolute disappointment. It's not fun at all. It's a series of cutscenes and shitty minigames interspersed with (admittedly nice) combat sections. Two hours in and one of my party members tells me it's "time to run errands." I feel like I'm being trolled.

The writing was on the wall with Ys Seven. Things got even worse with Celceta. With VIII things have now hit rock-bottom.

Falcom swallowed the "Modern Game Design" kool-aid and tossed out everything that made the previous games so interesting. There's no archaic atmosphere here, no creepy architecture, no environmental variation. Music is bland, graphics are way too glossy and clean, the characters are trope-y turds, and Adol is a wimp.

Story-heavy games are good only when the genre is appropriate (visual novel, text adventure etc). Good action games employ the "show don't tell" method of conveying a narrative. The worst feature of modern gaming is the alternating play/watch design. Falcom spent years ignoring trends and keeping it "old school" but now they're releasing sub-Idea Factory slop.

After trudging for several hours my favorite part of the game is where some dude tells me he's gonna take a nice big dump.

This legit sucks.

Definitely not what I was hoping to hear.

I admit the parts of Ys Seven where characters drone on and on via plot exposition, were not fun. From what I understand, said plot exposition was expounded further in Celceta. It sounds like it's even worse in VIII. Ys is supposed to be fast paced rip roaring fun with minimal dialogue. That's why I think Ys Origin is the best, because it encapsulated that idea wholly and never wasted my time. I don't know man. People love long-winded, non-interactive, superfluous cutscenes a whole lot in JRPGs these days.

And mandatory mini-games can always burn in hell.

I'll still give VIII a try eventually. I haven't gotten around to Celceta yet though.

I'm kind of grinning here, if Bone hates it... maybe I'll love it?

Played the bumpin' first one on Steam, Origin, Ark something, the PS2 game, Oath something, none of them really hooked me. I recently heard the second game introduced magic though, maybe that would make it more fun than just running into stuff. I might try it.

New one still looks cool to me. I can't imagine it's FFXV bad.

Man the NSMB games are trash. Bland visuals. Bland "dah dah" music in every game. They all control like they are an ice level. Also, agree on the DKR and Tropical Freeze. ust didn't click with me. The OST to Tropical Freeze is amazing, however.

The momentum in New Super Mario Bros. is akin to Mario 64. There is that give to allow you to do things like the triple jump, the turn jump and of course, the wall jumps. I get it if they don't click for folks, but they are that way for a reason.

I think the NSMB games control better than the NES titles in the series personally. I'd probably like them a lot more if they mixed up the boring visual style though.
