This whole RPG / notRPG thing is largely irrelevant. Genres are all mixed up these days. Given the action-like nature gameplay, Nier Automata could easily be an action game. But it is certainly also an RPG. That said, I think RPG traditionalists might not see it as part of their genre, and Action is something of a catch-all (and a modifier: action-rpg, action-puzzle, etc...).

I am currently playing god of war on the ps3. I have hated on the franchise for years without ever playing it, but recently scored the legacy collection for a nearly $3 so I thought I would give it a fair shake.

And contrary to what Segata has stated, it isn't a mashing game. Circle is throw.... first off... so not a good button to mash, but most importantly enemies have attack patterns and prioritizing targets is essential. Some enemies have shields that can only be broken using certain moves, some enemies are unreachable unless you use certain special attacks and many enemies change to into more powerful types if you let them sit for a while.

The game has surprisingly a lot of depth in how you cause destruction. What is most surprising is how few QTEs there are. The first boss used them and from there on out, it isn't essential to do any unless you want a certain enemy type to refill health or mana versus getting so for your weapons... and again only 3 or 4 enemy types have qtes involved.

The game is fun... but not an rpg.

I also hate the genre arguments. Who cares what it's genre is. Most if the time we break stuff up now in gameplay elements versus simply saying rpg. Is it tactical or not? Turn bases or real time? So much goes into genres now it is impossible to just say one thing so why fight about it... just enjoy it.

I would like to preface that I post on my phone nowadays... so spelling errors abound!

You need to play more JRPGs.

You really do. Those are some good games but none of them were on the SNES.

Yeah, well, those games actually ARE rpgs, unlike Nier Automata

Yeah, that's what people who don't actually know their genres say. Much easier to just act like genres aren't even a thing anymore than to actually be knowledgeable about them. Nier Automata is an open world, hack n slash, action game with some 2d shooter sections that's honestly feel like tacked on mini-games (that's pretty much what the hacking is) and it's pretty obvious. FF XV is a jrpg. Combat is turn based in FF XV. Combat in Nier Automata is not. It's pure, real time action. FF XV gives you a party of 3 to 4 characters, like practically every jrpg ever. Nier is mostly just you doing everything, with your little sidekick 9S occasionally helping. In FF XV, you issue commands to your party members, because that's how jrpgs work. In Nier Automata, you can set a combat style for 9s, but he largely acts on his own

Do I have to continue? I know genres, and Nier Automata is not an rpg.

Well, I'd argue that FFXV isn't a pure JRPG, it's an action-RPG. It's a little more sedate than the more hectic hack-'n'-slashers, but in some ways, it bears a little Secret of Mana DNA, a more RPG-centric but still "action" take on the genre. (It's also got a lot of MMORPG structure, which I don't find particularly fun. Sticking to the story content is how I ended up finishing it.)

I can't weigh in on NieR: Automata, but hopefully will eventually.

Because action RPGs aren't a thing.

Dragon Quest I.

Dragon Quest IV.

I haven't played Automata yet (probably after XII), but so far you haven't said anything that disqualifies it. Now, if you had things like it has no stats, like Zelda, then you'd have an argument (as Zelda is not an RPG except for II).

NA does have stats it just redirects them in abilities with your weapons and bot. Also you need a party of 3-4 to be a RPG? So Ys isn't a RPG? lol ok.

Japan invented Action Role Playing games. The West invented turn based. Every single JRPG until DQ was action/bump based. A JRPG is not a JRPG because it's not turn based. It's like saying Dragon Age Origins isn't a WRPG because it's turn based. (and yes it is turn based because the timing of your swing is purely stat based) . FFXV isn't MMORPG really at all. That's Xenoblade and Xenoblade X ESP X.

Bone just sounds stubborn and clinging on to nostalgia. I have loads for the 90s as well but dismissing modern RPGs as bad is flat stupid. Also Xenoblade and Persona 4 are some of the best RPGs ever made period.
