Not into black/death myself, but have you heard of Satan's Host? Skimming some of those links you posted, you might like them. I only know of them because of vocalist Harry Conklin from Jag Panzer, Titan Force, etc. It's a very interesting blend of genres. Their first few albums have atrocious production haha, but the new stuff is way bigger budget.

I've been down the rabbit hole of Japanese female metal stuff. It all started when I discovered Babymetal (who put on an amazing show this summer), then I discovered Bridear, Aldious, Cyntia, and Mary's Blood. Now I'm planning on doing a Japan trip sometime next year to see a Babymetal show and hopefully one or more of the other bands (depending on who's on tour at the time).

Any fans of the atmospheric, dark ambient, black metal out there? I'm looking for some suggestions/recommendations and to see if there's any fans?

If you dig Darkspace, check out Paysage d'Hiver. It's one of the guys from Darkspace. Way less "spacey" and way more lo-fi and crunchy.


I gotta admit, I'm not up-to-date on the modern black metal scene. But I do think that most of the best "atmospheric" BM albums come from the 90s European second wave. Here are three of my favorites.

Forgotten Woods - As the Wolves Gather
One of the earliest "depressive" black metal albums. Hypnotic riffing with shockingly audible bouncy bass and weird echo-y snarled vocals. Their first two albums are essential. I enjoy the song-oriented As the Wolves Gather just a touch more than the dreamy wall-of-sound The Curse of Mankind.


In the Woods... - Heart of the Ages
Yeah, more "woods"! This shit is awesome. Huge, sweeping riffs, with a touch of progressive rock influence. Several different vocal styles at play, unabashed synth abuse. The opening track is one of BM's defining anthems.


Nagelfar - Hünengrab im Herbst
Comically underrated. "Elite" Germanic black metal with razor-sharp drumming and quasi-industrial driving synths. Somehow all manages to sound woodsy and organic. Mandatory.

Listening to some Iron Maiden and Quiet Riot atm.

Been on the Maiden kick again myself. I'm seriously starting to wonder if Number of the Beast is my favorite. I love Killers and the original singer, the punky influences were there, and Number is this really cool crossroads that still has remnants of that stuff but leaning heavier into the metal. There's just something about it that's so free form yet deliberate, like jam/jazz metal.

Piece of Mind is still the weakest one to me. Somewhere is the easiest to jump into, but when I'm in the mood for Powerslave or Seventh Son it's amazing. I still haven't listened to much after that.

I didn't get on the Maiden train until I saw them live (only being aware of Run To The Hills and Two Minutes to Midnight) so I don't really pay attention to what album a particular song is on, but Fear of the Dark is my favorite song in their catalog. Experiencing that live was utterly amazing.

Saw them live a few years ago at the Sprint Center here in KC. It was exhilarating, every single song had a huge set of props with Eddie doing insane stuff with fireballs and whatnot. Bruce Dickinson in his 50's running around like a teen haha.

It's funny how Megadeth was the opener and kind of just whatever to everyone and myself.

Would have loved to see megadeth at anytime, but never have. They are in my top 3 in metal, growing up.
