Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Many of the level layouts are quite different, including some of the bosses. The first boss and the final boss are both quite different. All the branching paths and alternate levels are gone as well. The music was translated pretty accurately, though. Still, it's a much weaker, and much different, game.

I'd have to agree with marurun. The PC-Engine version is definitely worth it if you can get it running on your machine. I found that Richter controls and responds much better and the levels seem funner in the PC-E version. The SNES version just seems kinda off somehow. I enjoyed playing as Richter so much that after beating Dracula X I couldn't wait to run through Symphony of the Night and play through it as Richter.

It's not hard to get it running. Find an ISO or other type image on-line. Use Daemon Tools to mount it as a CD. Use Ootake or, if you are savvy, Mednafen to play it. There's some Japanese, but really the game is pretty straightforward. Lots of alternate level endings and paths, though.
