Microsoft never belonged in console gaming. While I do like the 360 and the OG Box they still have kinda been clueless all these years. They have contributed very little Achievements have changed how games are designed for the worse with a bunch of arbitrary tasks or collectable. I will give them the HDD. XBL while a improvement over online services that came before...still SEGANET was there before and Xband and more. Even if you want to fully credit them with XBL..that's fine. Still they have done nothing since 2010 they have been irreverent to the industry and irrelevant since 2013. They never mattered in Japan. Phil Spencer thinks single players games are dead...yeah that kind of thinking is what killed Phantom Dust & Scalebound. They keep hyping up Scorpio but fail to see the biggest issues is..they are lacking compelling games. It seems they think Sea of Thieves,Halo Wars 2,State of Decay,Forza is a response to insanity Nintendo and Sony are doing. They may be good games but hardly system sellers while Switch and PS4 offering either something truly different and a very diverse library I think it's time MS bows out of consoles and just use Xbox and a PC service only.

You stated several reasons why Microsoft never being in console gaming would've been a bummer:
- Achievements
- Hard drive in every console (not just a peripheral)
- Network connectivity in every console (not just a peripheral)
- Online services (chat, parties, etc.)
and one to add:
- Halo, showing that FPS on console could work

Not everyone has a PC, many people prefer consoles for their ease of use and connectivity to a TV. Obviously this is an opinion thread, but just because you don't like Forza or Halo or Halo Wars or Gears of War, doesn't mean they aren't system sellers, they are and will continue to be so. Also remember that just because they don't sell in Japan, doesn't mean they have to step out of the game, the Xbox division is a very profitable division of Microsoft.

Everything Stark said, plus Microsoft also paved the way for indie developers getting into the digital space on consoles. They put out the first full HD console, and all other home consoles have to some degree adopted Microsofts approach to online services.

Your post pretty much reads "Microsoft doesn't have the exclusives I like, so they should quit...making consoles that sell 30+ million units." and I'll be dick whenever I damn well please.

I'll step up.

The original Xbox effectively predicted the migration of arcade and home console platforms to primarily commodity PC hardware.

No company does or doesn't belong in the console market. NEC was a PC manufacturer that entered the console market by partnering with Hudson and ended up bringing the CD-ROM to gaming via the PC Engine. Sony was a PC and technology manufacturer who entered the console market over disagreements with their former partner, Nintendo, concerning the Nintendo Playstation. Sony is now the dominant force in the console market. Microsoft entered the console market after a brief trial run working with Sega on the Dreamcast, and whatever you may not like about them, you cannot say they haven't had an impact on the direction gaming has taken in the past several years.

I gave them a HDD. Achievements are negative thing not a positive. I never said I dislike Forza. I like Forza but it's no system seller. They are yearly games. It's not like Mario Kart. 1 game per console cycle to make it truly compelling. Mario Kart Wii alone porbably sold more than every Forza game on XBO. Halo Wars as in HALO WARS had a stealth release and didn't sell that great. Halo main series not the seller it used to be. Splatoon outsold Halo 5. I had chat and parties with online services before XBL. Goldeneye showed how FPS on consoles can work. Every Dreamcast sold had a modem with it. So again was there already.

Has nothing to do with taste. The exclusives are not selling as well as the completion and there is less exclusives on XBO this year so far and Xbox has not sold 30 million consoles. They have Sold 29 million. PS4 is over 60 million now. Switch sold better in it's launch month than even the Wii by a large amount.

I guess I just realized that you're stating an unpopular gaming opinion and I should just let it go.

EDIT: Being second place and selling 29 or 30 million units is still a lot of money for Microsoft. You don't always have to be first bro.

Also, Microsoft has designed and produced some of the best controllers ever made. The 360 controller was a great controller. The Xbox One controller is even better.

There is a reason that the 360/One controllers are the default standard gamepads for PC gaming these days, and it isn't because most PCs use Windows.
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

Want: Games!!!

The d-pad aren't great, but neither are Sony's. That's probably part of why arcade sticks have had such a resurgence.

Connectivity to a TV is no longer an argument anyone can use against PCs. They literally hookup with the same cable. I dont think they have made a discrete GPU in the last five years that did not have HDMI out.

My worry with Microsoft is that they will start forcing us to use a new GFWL like product for PC games on Windows 10

It is exactly because most pc gamers use windows. Xinput is native in the OS.
