Dragon Quest III and VI look excellent. Very good spritework. I like the way they look better than the later remakes. But yeah, DQ1+2 and V don't look very good. Basically higher-color 8-bit graphics.

Agreed.

Things are starting to open up in Dragon Quest V. I'm working on helping an old guy rediscover the Rula spell, which would be really nice, because I hear Prince Henry got married while I was on a boat, and I just need to confirm that it was to Maria. I was able to reunite with Borongo, but, for all intents and purposes, I should not have had the item that let me do so. Anyway, the village that hired me in the port town to take care of something for them put a real damper on all of that.

So far, my (minor) complaints with the game are: a) the camera angle in dungeons, etc, and the limited angle of camera rotation in some of those areas; b) extremely low res textures on the world map. Otherwise, this is my favorite of the first five games, and is, now, just competing with Dragon Quest VIII. It's been about 11 years since I last played DQ VIII, though (not including the optional post game stuff). Also, my opinion of V, so far, is probably due in large part to the version of the game that I'm playing.

Right now, my party members include Borongo, Pierre, the Slime Knight, and Gandalf, the Big Eye. Borongo replaced a LV 20 Slime I was using, named Sura-rin. I also have a bunch of other monsters floating around in my carriage, and under the care of the old man in town. I REALLY wanted to get an Owl Bear, but I was not able to make that happen. I was also hoping that, by some chance, I might also get a Metal Slime, while I was hunting those, but no dice. I would think, if it's possible to get one, that they would be really good for the slime races at the Casino.

Made it to the last portion of the last battle of tactic ogre and i have to say that the game was completely ruined by that the last dungeon. First you have to go through long tedious filler and then at the end the game throws you cheap piece of shit of a boss.

I'm going to consider this beat eventhough i didn't beat the boss because this is just bullshit and i'm not going to spent another minute with this garbage.

Indeed. I told you the Hanging Gardens sucks.

Are you talking about the boss that clones your army against you, or the next boss after that?

The clone part is terrible too of course but i made it past that (with limited party) I know i could just spent time in the first part building up the special gauges an then going all out in the second phase but i just don't think it's worth getting angry while trying because there's no satisfaction for really going through with it.

There is way to prevent him using his bullshit AEO strike and dealing with the status effect strike but fuck it.

Well that game probably at least doesn't make you go through set of levels that can take hours and then have you face the boss without being able to go out to grind or buy items.

All this talk about TO's finale being horrible makes me laugh. I don't know if that was changed a lot in the PSP version or what, but nothing seemed significantly different or difficult to me from what I remember from the SNES version. It was just another normal tough JRPG final stretch to me I didn't think much of until some here started complaining about it.

From what i read the clones werent in the original which already makes a huge difference because you can then attack the boss with fullparty.

You are of course free to think otherwise but i think there's more than enough to warrant calling the last portion of the game terrible.

Just because this is not the only JRPG that does has a awful last portion doesn't make it okay.

I think the last portion was just fine, and was a welcome mild challenge. But like I said before, I did most of the side content, so my party was well stocked with unique weapons, and well leveled.
