I repeat, I have NEVER heard or read anyone calling an FPS a shooter.

Yeah^^...."shooter" is too generic, that`s why we need those other words or letters. I think "shmup" was just a catchy portmanteau that stuck for whatever reason these things do stick.

On related note, I vastly prefer "brawler" to "beat`em up". Again, no idea why. Though maybe brawler is more precise: it has to be 2.5 or 3D (but not DMC or Bayonetta) while beat`em up might include 2D games like Karateka or Bruce Lee (but not DMC or Bayonetta x2. These are some sort of "action" or "hack`n slash" games. For me :)

But of course, NOT FIGHTING GAMES. These are, well, fighting games.

Semantics+videogame genres = fun :)

See, I've always thought of beat me ups as 2D and Brawlers as 3D, with hack and slash indicating a focus on weapons over hand to hand.

I have heard shooters used instead of FPS, but mostly by people younger than me.

In Spanish it's what they are called: Shooters en primera persona. Shooters en tercera persona. Yes, we use the word "shooters"

I've heard people and friends refer to TPS and FPS collectively as shooters. I don't think it's really that uncommon of a reference.

Yeah my students called games like Halo "shooters."

Wonder when the term "fixed shooter" came about. Surely no one used that back in the day.

I hope that dedicated (or gaming-first) handheld gaming never dies off.

That's probably not an unpopular gaming opinion on these forums but I suspect it is out in the world at large.

I agree. I would prefer the Switch to be the last home console ever, but I don't like the idea of a phone-based mobile gaming future.
