Well, they did publish Bayonetta 2, so... probably not an issue?

Under Iwata-san, no, I definitely don't think that would have happened. Kimichima-san, however, is a smart business-minded gentleman. I think he'll see the value in garnering loyalty from that small but fervent niche.

Also don't forget that Bikini Zombie Slayers and MadWorld were Wii exclusives.

Yeah, MadWorld surprised me.

I suppose a follow-up question would be, do we know for sure that the Vita is the end of Sony in the portable market, that the Vita won't eventually get a successor, especially now that Nintendo is finally releasing a tablet-ish system?

There are rumors of a Vita successor based on some patents Sony submitted a few years back, but we have no idea how much is concrete and how much is just them getting their ideas in before they get poached.

I think they'd be okay with it. Nintendo has been more lax towards risque stuff lately. For example:

I'd be okay with the Switch carrying the weeaboo torch onward after the Vita finally runs out of steam. But I look towards actual Steam (the PC service) to really keep going with it. I've seen a lot of ecchi Japanese games get ported to PC and land there lately. I've also seen more and more indie Japanese developers produce PC games natively in this genre.

Given how well they're doing in the console arena (by accident, I assure you), if I were Sony, and knew how bad I was at marketing ANYTHING (handhelds especially), I wouldn't even think about another PSP. Then again, being Sony they love an excuse to waste a ton of money on something no one will buy, so maybe that's a "for sure" that something is coming.

On a slightly more serious note (as I was being fairly serious before), if the frenzy for the Switch stays as high as it's been so far, that leaves Nintendo with a very heavy clamp on the handheld market, from the 2DS with its huge market presence at the low-end price range, to the Switch with its console-esque (?) performance at the higher end (and the 3DS XL somewhere in between). I really don't know what they'd be trying to accomplish or what unsought niche they'd be trying to fill with another handheld when the market is already totally saturated between Nintendo and smart phones (and Nintendo on smartphones :P ).

The conspiratorial Nintendo fanboy in me thinks the only reason I can think of for Sony to do one now is to attempt a kill shot on Nintendo. Driving them out of the hardware business and solely into software would certainly benefit Sony greatly.

Of course, as you point out, that move would also be fraught with peril, and could blow up in their face.

It was no accident. They let Mark Cerny design the console this time and that was a wise choice that paid off big. That's not the only reason the PS4 is doing well, but it was the first step towards a well executed plan.

The Switch's biggest threat isn't Sony, it's mobile tablets and smartphones. I'm sure Sony already realizes that, and is just sweating Nintendo out.

I sincerely doubt that Sony will put out a Vita successor handheld. Shuhei Yoshida said in 2015 that Sony had no interest in a Vita successor due to the overwhelming popularity of mobile. And that popularity has only continued to increase since then. ( http://www.polygon.com/2015/9/26/940145 ... -says-sony ) If I were Sony, I'd double down on console dominance and producing a AR/VR hybrid headset.

Is Ys Origin a re-release of the PC version? Any real differences?

I completely get what you're saying, but the Vita was the killshot. Remote play, cross-saves, etc. That was the chance. That shipped has sailed now. It's Nintendo vs. the mobile space.
