Won't the torches be extinguished next time it rains? I had thought of that but figured it'd be a waste of torches if so.
Nope! Torches (and other lighting sources) are great ways to keep enemies from spawning in your spaces!

A buddy of mine used to run a public Minecraft server for kids. One kid built a replica of the starship Enterprise from Star Trek: The Next Generation to scale. Another kid built Wrigley Field. You could teleport yourself to a baseball game and see the Cubs win, something we though was unbelievable at the time.

The 1701D and Wrigley Field, that's insane, shame it can't be seen (or can it?)
Glass isn't a problem, obviously you'll need to generate a way to create it like in real life, and yes you're right sand. It's not something to craft...hmm.
The same space could also be a source of added charcoal for you as well, given that if you space out torches every so often so you have probably (guess) 50% lumination or better to keep the nasties out of your mining operation.
Erased some of this post...I found a book I got a couple years back at half price in the clearance bin, the Minecraft Essential Handbook by Scholastic. It has all the basic crafting info, depths for ores, the coordinate system (F3), and more on it. It lacks a lot of higher detail as there were a series but it's a solid starter book for fast reference.

I'll probably tinker with it more sometime later. Am I doing it fairly well as far as my choice of digging down? Also how far is it usually to redstone or better minerals?
Is there a coordinate system in case I do get ever lost? I know you have a compass but that's probably going to need redstone or something for the magnetism factor behind that.
So there is a coordinate system if you are 0lay8ng with pc by hitting one of the function keys...I think it is f2. Console versions though do not have that, but they do start you off with a map.
You can craft a map that you fill out by exploring and will have a marker for your character, just make sure to activate the map in your home so it is centered on the map. By making duplicating the map and putting it in an item frame will also make a colored marker on your map at the location the item frame is placed.
As for ore locations here is a handy dandy chart

Thanks, found a book I bought a couple years back that had the coordinate system and mining depths in it. I don't recall ever knowing about a MAP in the game. Mining alone will get boring. I checked the book and that MAP is in there as well as the formula for making a compass too, nothing about a frame though but has one for a clock. There's sections for gardening, animal husbandry, armor, mining carts/rail, random other stuff. I know it probably had no more than 5-10% of the stuff you could create I imagine but it's a safe starter option to get the basics in so you don't eat it quickly or get bored/burned out.

Yeah a lot has changed. PC version has flying machines now. You can make armor stands and the like as well.. some crazy stuff

Guess I wasn't too far off the mark as I know it has been kept in wide and open development over the years which is why it likely still keeps people coming back to it.
I doubt I'd get all that crazy. I'd like to mine, make some stuff, go explore, but that will require a map, compass, red dust, and a few other things and sure armor would help a lot against annoying attacks.

When you get comfy you will need to make a portal into the Nether... a hellish landscape of death and destruction.

I found this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... book&hl=en
which I've been using for reference of crafting recipes or materials. It's pretty neat.
I might look into that same book Tanooki mentioned. I like the idea of sort of a simple "get started" guide.
